I installed the new hard disks & followed the instructions on MS's website. The machine is the same hardware, same name, IP address, just new harddrives. After installation & updates, I can run the Exchange Admin program and see mailboxes, etc, but MTA does not start. Event log gives the following errors: Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeMTA Event Category: Directory Access Event ID: 137 Date: 10/20/2005 Time: 4:54:08 AM User: N/A Computer: KDC01E Description: A fatal directory error occurred. Change to the maximum logging level for more details. [MTA MAIN BASE 1 15] (16) Event Type: Warning Event Source: MSExchangeMTA Event Category: Resource Event ID: 9406 Date: 10/20/2005 Time: 4:54:08 AM User: N/A Computer: KDC01E Description: There is not enough Performance Monitor memory to display the MTA Connections information. Stop attached Performance Monitors and re-start the MTA. [BASE MAIN BASE 1] (14) If I start the Event Service, then try to start MTA, ES stops and I get this: Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeES Event Category: General Event ID: 5 Date: 10/20/2005 Time: 4:54:15 AM User: N/A Computer: KDC01E Description: An unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x80004005]. Any word on what I can do to get this up and running?

Well, got those errors taken care of (registry issues), but now the Event Service won't run: Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeES Event Category: General Event ID: 5 Date: 10/20/2005 Time: 5:21:48 AM User: N/A Computer: KDC01E Description: An unexpected MAPI error occurred. Error returned was [0x80004005]. Any ideas? Overall, e-mail's working, so I'm okay as long as it stays working.

Well, it's Exchange 5.5. We were receiving the 1018 error in the logs, which I was instructed it was a hardware issue tied to either the hard disk, or controller. I replaced the two drives with three new drives, re-installed the OS, installed EX and patches/SP, and copied the original databases over. Everything appears to be up and running, as there was one random registry key I missed. Everything's well now.

I looked through every registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services that pertained to Exchange, mostly in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeMTA\Parameters for your MTA issue, for any key that had the organization & site name in it (/o=ORGANIZATION/ou=SITE/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=SERVER/cn=Microsoft MTA). The problem I had was the display name of the site was 'Services KDC', while the actual name was SVCKDC, so I entered in the incorrect information when I re-installed Exchange. Once I realized this, I hunted through the multiple MSExchange folders and changed all the keys I found, but I happened to miss one. Once I got that corrected, everything worked, and has been working.
