I am trying to change the Default receive connector extended rights to allow Anonymous messages to appear like they are authenticated so that they can deliver mail to distribution lists that only accept mail from authenticated users. I know I can setup a connector with Externally Secured authentication and Exchange Server permission group and that would do the job but I really need to do this for the default connector for the simple reason that many clients use IMAP with unauthenticated SMTP and it is not feasible to change them all to authenticated SMTP.

I have tried to assign ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Authentication-Flag to Anonymous Logon but that does not help.

While troubleshooting this and running through various test cases, I discovered that another right called ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Authoritative-Domain-Sender plays a role in message authentication. It is assigned to anonymous user permission group which amkes sense but not assigned to Exchange Users permission group. This does not make sense and if I assign this right to Authenticated Users, authenticated messages start showing up as unauthenticated. This is strange behavior. However, adding or removing this right to anonymous users does not make any difference.

I would really like some help with getting anonymous users to appear authenticated through the default connector.

Do you mean that external domain user (like someone@hotmail.com or someone@therecompany.com )will send the mail to distribution group that you have created in your organization?

No not external users. These are internal users who use IMAP (Thunderbird on Linux) to access their e-mails from Exchange but use unauthenticated SMTP for sending e-mails and they need to be able to send to DLs that only accept e-mails from authenticated users. I have already configured the default receive connector as an open relay with accept-any-recipient, bypass-spam-filter, and bypass-size-limit rights and all of that is working fine except their ability to send to DLs.
