Hello,

My Exchange serves mail for abc.com. I want to receive mail for xyz.com as well. I do not need to send mail from xyz.com, only receive. I do not need OWA for xyz.com. I just want any piece of mail going to *@xyz.com to come to my server and look for a recipient with that address. I have created addresses for xyz.com within each user profile along with their abc.com addresses.

I have created an A record for xyz.com that reads mail.xyz.com points to xx.xxx.xx.xxx.xx ip address of mail server.

I created an MX record for xyz.com that reads xyz.com Priority High goes to mail server mail.abc.com

I created a lookup zone in DNS for xyz.com.

I added xyz.com to the existing recipient policy, but I did not check mark it as I don't want future users to have an xyz.com address automatically, only current ones.

I'm receiving no mail for xyz.com! I get bounce backs saying delivery of message failed. I don't know what I'm dong wrong.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Could someone give me a hand with this one? I could really use some help. I don't think it's anything too difficult. Probably something dumb I'm overlooking.

Thanks

Test your configuration.  First, go to an outside system and use NSLookup to see if your MX record is configured the way you think it is.

Assuming it is, test with Telnet and see what happens if you send a message to your new domain name.

Post your results if you need help interpreting.

How did you create these addresses? Do you have a recipient policy for xyz.com created in the exchange organization? Have you made your exchange organization authoritative for xyz.com domain?

To answer de.blackman, I did include the new secondary address in the policy. I have not check it bacause I do not want one of these addresses created for each new user I add. I'm not sure I know what you mean by "exchange organization authoritative "

Uemurad- nslookup worked fine. However when doing telnet I got some results. I also added yet another domain to test with.

When telneting to one of new addresses, I got "unable to relay for ............"(address)

When telneting to the other new domain address I created for myself, I got this "ip address blocked by SpamHaus Triple List".

Now, I do use SpamHaus on my Exchange server, but the email address I used to send the mail was a common hotmail address. I don't know why SpamHaus would block that, or my IP address. I'm at home doing this. I never have problems sending mail to my work domain.

So, one domain looks like a relay issue. The other being blocked by Spam Haus.

Thanks guys. Any suggestions?

Just as a follow up, and to clearify:

I have tested a little more with telnet and got the same results as my previous post.

I'm working with 3 different addresses while I test.
1. My original email address for the domain I have hosted mail for all along with no problems.
2. My new domain I am hosting mail for.
3. My own personal address that I stuck in there just for a third for testing.

I can telnet successfully to my original (No.1 email address). But for my other 2 I get either "unable to relay", or "blocked by SpamHaus".

It seems that I get the unable to relay message more often. I turned off my Spam Haus filter to check. I am currently getting the relay message.

I don't understand what this is saying or how this is a relaying situation. I'm not trying to relay. I have the A Record & MX record at the domain host pointing to this server.

Understand that a relay is anything that stores-and-forwards messages because it isn't the ultimate destination.  This ties into de.blackman's question about whether you configured your Exchange to be authoritative.  Without this configuration, you are telling Exchange to try to send the message somewhere else.

Open the properties of your Recipient Policy where you defined the secondary (and tertiary) domains.  On the E-mail Addresses (Policy) tab, highlight the domain name and click Edit.  You will see a checkbox "This Exchange Organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this address".  Checking that box indicates that any messages reaching your Organization with that address format will be matched against your AD information.

I appreciate the responses and the help. However I checked on the recipient policy as suggested, and the email addresses I'm concerned about were already checked, making my server authoritative. So I'm afraid that isn't the issue.

At Register.com, my records are set up as follows:

MX: mydomain.com points to mail.myservername.com
A: mail.mydomain.com points to my server IP

I just can't imagine what is different about these 2 domains and the way they are set up from my main domain that my Exchange hosts mail for.

I have the domain's A and MX records pointed to the server. I have the domain registered in my DNS server here, I have the domains set up in Exchange.

Thanks

When you telnetted to the FQDN of the MX record of your secondary (or tertiary) domain, does your Exchange server answer, or is it some other system?  Exchange servers will identify themselves as a Microsoft ESMTP server, and if you haven't changed anything, will display the name of your server.

When I telnet to my server, I get:

220 myserver.mydomain.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.1830 ready at  Mon, 7 Jul 2008 09:43:56 -0700

What exactly are you seeing with yours?  If it is close to what you what you posted last, it sounds like it is being received by something other than Exchage.  If so, that is where you should be looking for relay allowance settings.

Oh, I'm sorry, you are correct. I get the same thing you just said when I make initial connection. I was telling you what response I got when I send a HELO.

But when I connect, I get: 220 mail.domain.com Microsoft ESMTP Mail Serivce, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at Mon, 7 July 2008 13:57:13 -0400

I then say: helo domain.com
It says: 250 mail.domain.com Hello [IP Address]

I say: mail from: my hotmail address
It says: 250 2.1.0 hotmailaddress@hotmail.com..... Sender OK

I say: Rcpt to: me@secondarydomain.com
It says: Unable to relay for me@secondarydomain.com

I do this same process for my primary domain and it works just fine. I finish the message and go to my Outlook, and there it is.

Thanks for the clarification.

Is the destination mailbox on the server to which you are connecting with the telnet session?

What happens if you perform the same telnet test on that particular Exchange server?

Please try the following steps - and check if your issue gets solved.

Open the Exchange System Manager;
Go in Administrative Groups -> Administrative group name -> Server -> Server name -> Protocols -> SMTP;
Right click on Default SMTP Virtual Server -> properties;
Access tab -> Relay buttom;
Select "only the list bellow" and add your domain and\or IPs you do want to allow the relay. (In your case the first & second domain)

 and finally check  the "Allow all computers witch successfully authenticate to relay, regardless of the list above" checkbox.

You would be required to restart SMTP & Routing Engine service, post making the above changes.

Thanks,

I just tried that, but I'm afraid it made no change. When I type rcpt to: me@secondarydomain.com I get the unable to relay response. I then type rcpt to: me@primarydomain.com and I get through.

As per what ever you have informed your Exchange environment looks picture perfect, however lets have the Exchange Best Practise Analyzer test. Please run this tool and inform us about the results.

I found this blog article.  I tested it and it worked without performing an IIS reset, but to be sure it (IIS reset) is probably the best thing to do.

http://thejimboeffect.blogspot.com/2007/01/multiple-email-domains-on-exchange-2k3.html

I'm still researching the cause of why this becomes necessary, and the author didn't cite his source.

I agree with you about the iis reset is not reqd, since what he is basically changing is at the Metabase and to have it reflected System Attendant is the service which should be restarted (since DS2MB is a key component of SA).

Okay, it would appear that the Metabase fix was the right answer. We added the secondary domain to it, restarted iis (and system attendant just to be sure) and the telnet completed successfully. Then an email actually sent from hotmail also made it through to the Outlook inbox.

What a relief!!

Thanks Exchange Geek and uemurad for the help and everybody else for their input. Bookmark that webpage! Worked great!
