Receiving from ISP through router, Port 25 - 26.Jun.2000 6:03:00 AM

I am trying to get our Exchange 5.5(SP3) to download mail from our ISP through a router. Mail goes out OK to ISP no problems. Queued mail however is not downloaded from them. The ISP says that the mail should be automatically sent as soon as a connection is established, and that we must have a problem with blocking of port 25 connections on our system. Does anyone know how I can check the status of port 25 and also how to free it up?

Our ISP is Demon Internet in the UK.

TIA

try telnet

telnet yourmailserver.com 25
and if you get in, it should be no problem.

I tried telnet using advice from Technet and was able to send an email to the Exchange server no problem. Technet recommended then telnetting from the ISP computer. They tried but were unable to do this suggesting the problem was with port 25 on our side.
How do I resolve this?

I had the same problem..are you using NAT if so check your configuration..I had to statically assign the server address to port 25 and 110 on the router...

Sounds like a firewalling issue. Try telneting into the Exchange server from your home machine. If you telnet into the server from a node located on the same network as the Exchange server, then you've essentially bypassed the firewall. Hope this makes sense.

The firewall will probably allow outgoing mail, however, will block incoming mail. Someone also mentioned earlier that if you're using NAT (network address translation) on the router/firewall, that you may need to enable port forwarding for port 25 from the router/firewall to the Exchange server.

Yes we are using NAT. I wondered whether this might be a prob with the router setup. I will try as you suggest.

I will try telnetting in from an external computer.

You say I may need to enable port forwarding for port 25 from router to exchange, but how do I actually go about doing this???

TIA

Success at last!

I assigned the ports to the Exchange IP in the router and we now have our mail delivered.

Many thanks for your help 'marior' and Don

Grant,
Please share your experiences and lessons learned! I'm particularly interested in how you configured the ports between your firewall/exchange servers/clients. What ports did you open and how did you lock them down where Exchange doesn't try to open ports you never configured? Any help is truly appreciated. Can't seem to restrict the ports.. Dee Veasey

Enterprise Vault û Managing Email Explosion!

Enterprise Vault from KVS is an add-on software product purely for Microsoft Exchange that implements archiving & retrieval of email and attachments. It provides automatic, policy-driven, life-cycle management of information in Exchange stores. Enterprise Vault stores electronic mail messages in such a way that they can be recovered as usable messages exactly as they were before being moved from Exchange, with all their properties and attachments intact. It is also very non-intrusive to the user.
In summary Enterprise Vault provides:
+ Policy-based retention of emails and attachments (e.g. compliance SEC rules on journaling)
+ Reduction on ongoing storage costs (hardware & admin) and server back-up times also
+ Resolution of "space-wars" between users & administrators (removal of users mailbox quotaÆs)
+ Provision of "data mining" facilities for shared access & retrieval of archived material - for auditing and corporate research
+ Security to reliably segment & control access to archived emails
+ Removal & recovery of PST files by migrating into a central store
+ Enable easier and more efficient migration from Exchange 5.5 to 2000

Many organisations use Enterprise Vault to manage unstructured Exchange data. Samples of these companies are:

+ Vodafone Libertel + British Gas Group + Clifford Chance
+ Dresdner Kleinwort Benson + Belgacom + Freshfields

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance!

Yours sincerely,
