Having never had the misfortune of having to recover a deleted or corrupt mailbox from a backup I thought I would have a go in my test lab to see how it is done! VM Server Windows 2003 Standard SP1 Exchange Standard 2003 SP2 NTBackup I backed up my Information Store using NTBackup I created a Recovery Storage Group (accepted default paths) C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group etc... I selected 'Add database to recover' (accepted defaults) C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SRV2).edb etc... I then attempt to restore using NTBackup. This where I AM doing something wrong as from what I have read it is quite a simple process!! I selected to restore the Mailbox Store (SRV2) + Logs. I accepted the default restore location of SRV2 as I was under the impression it would detect the Recovery Storage Group automatically. Temp location for log and patch files: C:\logs Restore fails: The log shows that it is attempting to restore to: SRV2\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group The failure reports it is unable to restore to the above location. I tried amending the restore path to: SRV2\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group This restores zero (also returns error: The specified computer is not an exchange server or its microsoft exchange services are not started). So easy one :) WHAT AM I NOT DOING/ Thanks, Phil.

Thanks for the reply. Application Logs record in order they are genereated: 1) ESE BACKUP 904 2) ntbackup 8003 3) ntbackup 8019 It is because the restore is attempting to restore to the original location (and the database is in use). I was under the impression that if you restored an exchange storage group it detected the Recovery Storage Group automatically? I know it is something I am doing/not doing? I basically have 2 mailboxes held in a single store. I backed up the store. I deleted a mailbox then purged. I want to restore this mailbox from backup. Thanks, Phil.

I believe so. Here is the backup failure log: Restore Status Operation: Restore Backup of "SRV2\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group", Restored to"SRV2\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group" Backup set #1 on media #1 Backup description: "Set created 01/08/2007 at 15:03" Restore started on 01/08/2007 at 15:05. Unable to restore Exchange data to SRV2\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group, check the application event log for more information Restore completed on 01/08/2007 at 15:05. Directories: 0 Files: 0 Bytes: 0 Time: 1 second ---------------------- Heres is the process I have followed: I created a Recovery Storage Group in ESM (accepted default paths) Transaction Log Location C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group System Path Location: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group I right clicked the RSG and selected 'Add database to recover' (accepted defaults) Exchange Database C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SRV2).edb Exchange Streaming Database C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SRV2).stm This did not create any databases within the Recovery Storage Group folder. The MS article posted said: "The database that you want to restore has been added to the recovery storage group. By default, these databases are not mounted. Leave them in this state." I have no databases in the storage group unless I mount the store created above? This then adds to files to the Recovery Storage Group Folder: Mailbox Store (SRV2).edb & Mailbox Store (SRV2).stm I backed up the original store using NTBackup. The databases are standard: priv1.edb & priv1.stm The original store is configured as follows: Transaction Log Location C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata System Path Location: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata I KNOW I AM MISSING A TRICK. JUST NOT SURE WHAT IT IS!! Thanks, Phil.

Are you sure you have enough space where your Recovery SG is located?

Storage Group tiny only 27mb (test lab). I have 6GB on the virtual drive. Pretty sure I am missing something as from what I have read it should be a straight forward process. Phil.

Hiya Phil, This is the process that I have used and works well; Open NTBackup and select restore (at this point the original store should STILL be online, and the RSG created with the databases added - but this should be offline (also ensure that the "this database can be overwritten by a restore is set on the RSG Database ONLY). If you have tried previously to restore a backup and it failed then delete the files in the RSG directory and delete then recreate the RSG database (but do not mount it) PRIOR to restoring from backup. Select the restore tab (do not worry about the Restore Files to saying original location), and choose your backup set - then click on start restore. You will be asked where to restore to (leave this as the server you wish to restore to should be configured) then set a path for the transaction logs and patch files (note this should be empty - if you have tried previous restores and not cleared this folder down then problems will occur). If you do not intend to restore addition logs tick the box that says "Last Backup Set" - then click ok. The restore will then process (you will not be asked anything about the RSG). When the restore has finished - wait a few minutes then mount the RSG. If you get an error message when mounting the RSG database, ignore it, wait a couple of minutes then try again (it relies on Directory Replication). That should be all you need. Cheers. A

Well would you believe that I am still failing! :( The Restore Fails as per previous posts stating: "Unable to restore Exchange data to SRV2\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group" Can I add screen dumps to posts? Can't see the option other than to add a URL. Sure it must be me!! Thanks, Phil.

Hiya mate, you can supply links to images in posts - so if you have a http: site that you can place the images on you can use the "Add Picture" button to reference the pict urls. Cheers A

Unfortuantly not regards the site............ Have you tested this OK in a Virtual setup? Pretty sure I am doing something incorrectly? Heres an overview: Single Storage Group: First Storage Group Mailbox Store (SRV2) Set up Recovery Storage Group: Recovery Storage Group Right clicked RSG selected 'Add database to recover' Accepted Defaults: C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SRV2).edb Exchange Streaming Database C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Recovery Storage Group\Mailbox Store (SRV2).stm This left me with: Recovery Storage Group Mailbox Store (SRV2) (dismounted) Note: Their are no database files within the RSG. My original First Storage Group is mounted with default priv1.edb & priv1.stm files within \Program Files\Exchsrvr\mdbdata Backed up using NT backup Restored as discussed? Pretty sure I am creating/naming something incorrectly when I create the RSG (pathts tec....). Thanks, Phil.

Oooops, one last hitch. Recovery of the individual mailbox failed. I thought it might be a permissions issue but the account I am using is Exchange Full Administrator (delegated control) also a member of Exchange Domain & Exchange Enterprise Servers: Failure xml Report: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="unicode" ?> - <taskWizardRun taskName="Recover Mailbox Data" dcName="SRV1" buildNumber="7638" runningAs=Administrator@TEST.LOCAL> <timespan startTime="2007-08-07 12:15:17.321" milliseconds="1161" /> - <recoverMailbox> - <destination> <database>/dc=local/dc=test/cn=Configuration/cn=Services/cn=Microsoft Exchange/cn=Test/cn=Administrative Groups/cn=First Administrative Group/cn=Servers/cn=SRV2/cn=InformationStore/cn=First Storage Group/cn=Mailbox Store (SRV2)</database> </destination> </recoverMailbox> <taskSummary errorCount="1" completedCount="0" warningCount="0" errorCode="0x00000000" /> - <items> - <item adsPath="Anne Smith" class="user"> <progress code="0" milliseconds="1161">Connecting to source server.</progress> <summary isWarning="false" errorCode="0xc1050000">The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed. Just to note the mailbox I am attempting to restore was purged from the original store. I have removed inheritable permissions from the security tab on the Storage Group / Mailbox Store, copied, then unchecked the 'Deny' permissions for Send As / Receive as for the admin account. Rebooted - Still the same error? Phil.
