We have an Exchange 2003 server that unfortunatly had an issue with an information store. It was unrecoverable. We proceeded to take each user affected and delete thier mailbox via the Exchange tasks in AD users and computers. The mailboxes were recreated using the same Exchange tasks menu. A message was sent to each recreated mailbox to "initialize" it.

Here is the issue. All the recreated mailboxes started giving NDRs internally. We first thought it was the auto completes which were in error. Outlook properties of the auto completed address shows no email addresses. Which causes the bounce. We delete the autocompled address and perform a send recieve to update the local copy of the GAL (this is with Outlook 2003). All is well, for the Outlook 2003 clients, with a perculiar anomole. When the new auto complete entry for that person populates it has the username plus an 8 digit number. For example. A user named John Doe would normally show in the autocomplete as:

John Doe <jdoe>

Now it shows:

John Doe <jdoe35972307>

My research on the web indicates that we should have run the cleanup agent on the Exchange server before recreating the mailbox. But this wasn't possible due to the store being corrupted and unmountable. And to add insult to injury we still get spurradic NDRs for certain recreated accounts.

How do we correct this? It is creating some confusion in the organization.

Analyze the continuing NDRs using Message Tracking. Also, what does the NDR say? Do messages always fail to that particular recipient or from a particular sender?

Look for the display name in the attributes using ADSIedit.
