Hi, i am hoping that you may be able to help.

I have a hard disk problem on my exch 2k3 server on the C Drive (windows os & exchange system files)

Let me explain my server setup.

Drive0 (C Drive Windows & exchange system files)
Drive1 (2 partitions, Partition 0 = Exchange log files, Partition1 = mirror data files)
Drive 2 (2 partitions, Partition 0 = Exchange data files, Partition1 = mirror log files)

problem, drive 0 has bad blocks, so need to replace.

My steps
1, can i stop exch serveices and backup log & data files
2, Replace Drive 0 and re install windows from fresh, same server name & IP
3, re install exchange with /recovery switch
4, point exchange to the log files & Database files (drive D & E)

Q1)  do i need to restore system state after i have reinstalled windows?

Q2)  also what happens to my mirros set, will the re install of windows pick this up or would i have to re create the mirror and restore the data?
Q3) if you had a DellPE 1750 (3 hot swap drive bays) would u set up the partitions different?
many thanks to all.

Anish

Hi Anish,

First of all I'd make sure I had a valid backup of Exchange and then I'd use a tool like ghost, or DriveSnapshot to take an offline image copy of Drive 0, swap the drive and put the image on the new drive.

A new install should see your existing partitions. I'm going to guess that the mirring is done in Windows rather than in hardware. I would always advise doing RAID in hardware

Cheers

Arne

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, however i did try using paragon drive backup 7, however, as i have bad blocks on drive 0 (boot, Windows & Exchange system/bianries) it failes on creating the image.

Hi,

Thats not good :-(

The other alternative, if you have the 'spare' hardware, would be to put in a second Exchange server, and migrate across to it, that way you'll have zero downtime (each mailbox while being moved will not be available) from a user perspective, and you don't have the issues of having to restore an Exchange server.

Cheers

Arne

Hi,

Thanks again, yes it is an option that i have thought about, and in the process maybe make the new server more ressiliant.
saying that i have just tried your suggestion of using drivesnapshot and that has imaged the drive no probelm, will try a restore image later and let you know how it went on.
Thanks again.

Hi Anish,

I would usually suggest putting in another server and migrating the mailboxes to it as you don't have to reboot the 'iffy' server, as if the disk is dying, then you don't want to subject it to any more power cycles.

DriveSnapshot is very nice :-)

Cheers

Arne

Hi Arne,

Well i just tried Drivesnapshop, does exactly what it says on the tin, shut down all my services, (backed up logs & db files just incase)  took an image, replaced the disk with a test disk, restored image and booted up like there was never a problem.

Going to put in the 'real' drive in the early hours tomorrow when there are no user connected.

Ill update you with my findings, however this leads me on to a new question,

whats the best way to set up exch2k3 in terms of redundancy.

thanks again.

Hi Anish & Arne..

Sorry for jumping into ur pool.....

I read ur discussion. I have a doubt if i am having a server which does't have RAID configured, OS and Exchage both are installed in C:\ and Exchage database in d:\, assume that OS gets corrupt and I have a DrivesnapShot image of the C:\, later I format c:\, install new OS and restore DriveSnap Shot Image file as it is than will my softwares get me available, will exchange work with its database which is in d:\..

Please let me update....

Best Regards..

Hi all,

I restored my image taken with snapshop, no probelms, i just shut down all serveices, took an image early this morning, and restored to a new disk with identical partitions. Booted up fisrt time and started excahnge no probelms. What i did find is that if the partition is different to the image it wont boot.

Balwant, are you saying that you wish to image C drive and take an image to restore. You can boot from dos and restore image, what i did was install the disk into another system whcih takes the same scsi drive, and restored from USB HDD. but as long as you can get the image onto the new drive i dont see a probelm. what i found was excellant was that i had a few bad blocks on my C drive which did not hold any data, using other imaging software it was not possible to take an image, using Drive Snapshot, it told me i had bad blocks, but still created the image.

Hope it helps. Arne, thanks for all your advise, much appreciated.

Anish

Yeah Mack..

I am saying to take the image of only c:\ which has my OS and Exchange Installed and database is in d:\..

I need to ask

1. that after formatting c:\ and installing the image into c:\ by using dos bootable
floppy OS and exchange will work with its Database which is in d:\..

2. Software which i installed in old OS will work after restoring the Image of c:\ or I will have to install them again..

3. How much the size of image will be if I create the Image of c:\

Hi Balwant,

1, yes Exchaneg will work like there was just a normal reboot.
2. All software will work like you just rebooted the PC
3. i had a 36GB drive and was using about 8GB my image sixe was about 4.5GB

As long as your software is working all ok, when you image the drive and restore it you will have no problems. Being double sure i shut down all services, and applictaions such as Anti virus, arcserve etc etc took an image and immediatly shut the box down.

Restored onto new disk (similar partitions) however my new disk is 2GB smaller but the image software promted to resize, i jsut said yes,
Booted from disk, and it was like i just had rebooted the system.

I assume D:\ is on a seperate disk?

hope this helps.

Hi, yes AD will get imaged as well.

Its like taking your current disk, and copying everything from it onto a new one, and letting you choose which one you want to use.

You ask 'So y one go for system state data.. ?????'

well if your software is curropt and you need to do a clean restore then you would need the system state to get the machine ad information put back onto it again, then you will need to re install your programs again.

Hi Balwant,

I wouldn't use drivesnapshot as a backup utility....

You should be doing regular backups of exchange and the system state, either to tape, or to another disk/server

Cheers

Arne
