I am currently attempting to install Sophos Puremessage on a windows 2000 server (sp4) with exchange 2000 (sp3)

The install program for puremessage comes back with a severe warning that it required exchange sp3 - although this is already installed and I have confirmed this in exchange system manager (version 6.0 build 6249.4:service pack 3)

The server has been running fine since Aug 2005

Sophos technical support are unable to help

I feel I may now need to reinstall SP3 _ can anyone give any advice on whether or not this would be a straight re install of the service pack or is there more to it than that?

Grateful for any help

Hi,

It should be as straightforward as running the update program from the service pack cd.

Make a backup of the server and the information store before you start the operation.

Remember also to reinstall any roll-up hotfixes you have applied to the running server

Thanks for your reply.

I've actually got to schedule downtime for this - and am a bit reluctant to reinstall service pack and patches at the moment as the server itself is running perfectly and has been since the day it was installed!

Another suggestion thats been made is that the server may have been installed with sp3 "slipstreamed". Rght enough, therre is no exchange sp3 in add\remove programs. Anyone know of way to verify whether or not exchange was installed with sp3 slipstreamed? and if so how to trick the sophos install in to installing?

Hi,

I am definately going to reinstall SP3.

The server is backed up using NTBackup and the mailstores are also backed up using Veritas.

I can't be sure about the order the hotfixes were installed - autoupdate is on to download the updates, we then check them and install. There are update rollups, hotfixes and security updates in Add\Remove Programs but NOT exchange SP3, should this appear??

I do have time to do this "properly" can anyone suggest the best way to go around this, ie the least risky? I can set up a test server etc. To do the actual reinstall I'll probably schedule a weekend.

Hi Nimky,

If you fear the worst then you should, to coin a phrase, face your fears.

Consider the worst case scenario of your server going completely pear shaped and you face having to do a full restoration - Do you know the process? I'm sorry if that sounds especially condescending, I don't mean it to, I just want to get across that it's better to have considered and prepared for all eventualities before rather than after the event. If you're worried that it's going to cause some horrendous corruption of data, you should know how to get out of that situation. I'd rather know that I know how to fix a major problem than worry about it happening. If you then see it happening you can rest easy that you know how to rectify it.

Now that the formalities are out of the way (please accept my apologies for that), installing SP3 is a very simple and very straightforward process. What you could do is look to install SP3 Update Rollup KB870540 (if I remember correctly). That update requires SP3 to install so it won't do anything without it.

Going back to my first paragraph, make notes about your current system layout, an important stipulation of restoring an Exchange Server is the partitions on the existing server. ie. If you have drives C,D,E,F and G on your original server, you need them on your new server too. Daft but true! Also, restoring your databases using Veritas Backup Exec is different to using ntbackup. After performing a /disasterrecovery installation of Exchange Server 2000, you are told not to mount the information stores or new (blank) ones will be created, with Backup Exec, you must do this!

Sorry about the mini lecture. I have assumed a certain level of understanding with respect to your questions. I hope what I've written helps you. :)

Hi Lewis,

Firstly, mini lecture much appreciated! I'm going to be honest here, I simply don't have experience of doing this. I really do fear the worst. I work in a high pressure 24/7 environment in a company that is not IT literate, yet are completely IT dependant. I've also inherited the networks and servers from previous IT managers. On top of this management simply don't care about IT as long as it's running, and simply have no idea what I do or what my job really involves! IT achievements are therefore only understood by me.

I know this situation is probably the norm (no "welcome to IT" replies please! ), i've just explained it to illustrate how an almost run of the mill server management task is actually a major project for me.

You touched on disaster recovery. I've decided to approach this from a disaster recovery perspective and research and test disaster recovery for the server. It is backed up, but I would be "winging it" if I actually had to recover it.

The win2000\exchange2000 disaster recovery project and test lab begins tomorrow . . .

Hi Nimky, I've come from a similar environment but they do have their advantages, you have to learn quickly, forcing you to be adaptive, and, if you work on your own, there's no IT office backbiting going on! I'm currently the subject of much persecution in my IT department. Having come in as the new SysAdmin, replacing one who was much loved by all - they're always looking for weaknesses or faults, heaven forbid if I make a mistake or have to actually ask a question! It's pounced on like a hungry tiger on a limping impala. I'd like to say it was gentle ribbing but it's whispered insults and they get tiresome.

Anyway, back to the task at hand. I've recently acquainted myself with disaster recovery restorations of both Active Directory and Exchange 2000 so if you need any help or advice, please feel free to ask!
