Hello Friends I have just recived my new server today. It will act as my "Mailbox", "Client Access" and "Hub Transport" and will replace the actual server running Exchange 2007 x86 TRIAL. The New Server is windows 2003 X64 With Exchange X64 Standard Edition. There is no Edge Server in my environment. I wouls like to take the old server offline and bring the new server with the configuration of the old one. Can you indicate me the steps to accomplish this please. thank you

Swing migration. Install Exchange 2007 with a new name. Then migrate all of the content. Once the clients have update, remove the old server. While you can attempt to keep the same name, it is high risk and requires that your backups are good. Once you have started the process you cannot stop, you must complete it. However a swing migration is completely risk free and you can back out of it at any point. Its all documented on technet.microsoft.com so I will not repeat it here. Simon.

Just a follow question. Since we transfer all mailboxes and public folders to the new server, then we take the old server off. Could we rename the new server to the same as the old one have. Like from Exchange2 to Exchange (Exchange is a name of the old mail server). Thank you. enz

No. You cannot rename an Exchange server, unless you want to practise your disaster recovery plans. If you want to use the existing server's name then you will have to do a full swing using a second interim server, and move everything twice. Simon.

So if I would like to upgrade from exchange 2003 to exchange 2007, I will do the following steps: 1. Install Exchange 2007 on Exchange2 server with Mailbox Roles only 2. Move database form current Exchange server to Exchange2 server 3. Remove that Exchange server out of AD. 4. Create a new Exchange Server and install exchange 2007 with Mailbox, client access and Hub Transport roles on it. 5. Move database from Exchange2 server to the new Exchange server. are my steps right? The reason to keep my new exchange server back to the original one is for web access. At the moment, for web access they use exchange.domain.com, If I change the name of the server, I just afraid it not gonna work any more. I think I do a stupid thing here. There should be a way to point that external link (exchange.domain.com) back to my new database right? Thanks enz

If you want to use the existing name with a new server then you have to move everything to another server with a different name. That means all of the roles as well as the data. You cannot just pick up the databases and move them to another machine, you have to move the mailboxes using Move Mailbox and the public and system folders using public folder replication. As you are swinging from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007, you need to take careful not of the migration articles on Technet, including removing the last legacy server. The name of the server has nothing to do with the name the users enter in to their browser for OWA access. You can use any name that you like. The only thing that you have to ensure is that Exchange has been configured correctly with that name and you have an SSL certificate with the preferred external name. As a rule I don't use the server's real name for OWA access, usually using something shorter such as mail.example.net, owa.example.net or post.example.net Simon.

Thank you for your time Simon I moved all my mailbox databases from the server I want to get rid of to the new server and everything went fine. The only thing is that I can't delete the public folder database (which is empty). Then I will install hubtransport role and client access role. Does it make a problem is 2 servers a client access role / transport hub at the same time in my organisation ?

You can have as many servers with whatever roles that you like. There is no limit. Simon.

I did follow your instruction and it work perfectly but I still have a question. The new server has mailbox role, hub transport role and client access role. The old server also has mailbox role, hub transport role and client access role. I can shut down the old server and the mail flow will go on. Nobody (no users) can tell there is a difference. When I start the EMC, I still see my old server event if it is offline, I guess that's normal because It still have Exchange installed on it. How can I remove this server from AD ? Thank you again for your time. -Martin

The only way to remove the server is to use Add/Remove programs. That will remove it from the domain correctly. Simon.
