Hi,

It is my friend's exchange server 2003 which have been running both as Global catalog server in Active Directory (PDC) and exchange server 2003. My friend use POP3/SMTP Services to connect his 100 users to this exchange server. Today, his server is too old and slow, he planned to replicate and sync Active Directory to other machine let say DC2 and setup it as Global catalog server (PDC). Then he will setup another MS Windows 2003 server as a secondary active directory server and setup exchange 2003 on it.

Any one can advise the best practices for this kind of setup?
Thanks for all your comments.

Hello,

All you need to do is move all the mailboxes from the old server to the new Exchange 2003 server, here is the link:-
Move Mailbox improvements in Exchange 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822892
Then you need to replicate public folders from the old server to the new server, here is the link for the same:-

Hemal

You should not install exchange on a domain controller, especially into environment where you have 100 users. The PDC is most heavily used FSMO role and should be carried by a single domain controller, since it handles
Synchronizes time over the domain, ensuring all clients have the same time - which is required for Kerberos authentication (logons) to work properly. Manages password changes made in the domain etc.
I have always been against installing any application on a domain controller anyway. Domain controllers must be set apart from other applications and they should provide domain controller services to the clients.
Implementing best practices will improve the business productivity and save valuable time in my opinion

The process above is not the best practise. Mailboxes are actually the LAST thing that you want to move. Public and system folders should be replicated across first. My guide to the process is here: http://www.amset.info/exchange/migration.asp

Hi All Experts!

I still got this error: Task ' Microsoft Exchange' reported error (0x800401OF) : The operation failed. An object cannot be found. always even I did move public folder from old exchange to new one. I also rebuild the offline address book but the problem still persist.

Have you replicated the system folders to the new server? The error message means cannot find, so I expect that you haven't replicated everything correctly.

Simon.

Hi,

Yes I did tried to replication public folder but when have done that nothing changed to the environment. Can I delete old public folders, remove old exchange server and create new public folder on new exchange server? How to make offline address book working again in this situation?

Regards/Ben.

How long did you wait? Replication isn't instant. It can take a little while for the data to move across. I tend to leave it at least 48 hours. If you can't wait then use the Send Content now option in ESM to force the content across.

While it is possible to recreate the public and system folder structure, it is a lot of work. I would be looking to see whether the data is replicating across correctly or not - if it isn't then that can indicate a problem with the Exchange environment.

Simon.
