Does anyone know of a quick work-a-round for restoring a full exchange server to a test bed. Without the Microsoft suggested 3 Servers and restored Sam?
Thanks Kas.

Hi, thanks for replying. I have managed a single mailbox recovery. In fact I have recovered the Priv & Public edb with no problems using my test network, which has exchange 5.5 on an NT4 PDC. The test network also includes an NT4 workstation with a dds tape drive. I would like to test a full exchange restore i.e including dsadata (dir.edb) but ms sugest using a pdc; bdc and workstation because of the original sam and I was wondering if there was any other way?
Regards Kas.

Hi,
You could install your server in your production network as a BDC. Disconnect this server and connect it to your test network, promote the server to PDC and install exchange 5.5 on this server. You will have everything on one server but it should work.

Kas, Leif has a good idea. To expand on this idea, see the following KB article: XADM: How to Set Up a Disaster Recovery Server for Dir.edb
The above steps only require 1 machine.
The reason for having the original SAM database is that when Exchange is installed into a site, the Exchange Service Account is hardcoded into the DIR.EDB. Because of this Exchange has to have access to the ORIGINAL SAM database when the Directory is restored. As you may have found out, just creating the same account name in the test bed network is not the same since the SID will be different.
