Quick question. In Default Managed Folders i can specify to retain all email in the Inbox for let's say 200 days. How do i apply this to individual mailboxes? I.e. i would like this managed retention limit to only be applied to my Archive email boxes. How would i go about specifying which users/mailboxes should be within the Default Manage Folder retention limit scope. Or does it encompass everyones INBOX within the whole exchange org. thanks alot for anyone that can shed some light on this.

The policies are just that - a set of rules. They don't apply to the users until you set them. You need to set that on to each user account. Properties, Mailbox Settings, Message Records Management. There is probably a script to set it in bulk, but I am feeling too lazy to look for it. :-) Simon.

Sembee, Thanks for the heads up. I'm afraid i will do something wrong here. Please advise if one of my steps are incorrect. I want all mail in the INBOX older than 180 days to be purged. I goto Default Managed Folders and on Inbox i specify to delete all emails after 180 days Then i goto Mailbox Policies and create a policy called 'Delete inbox Contents after 180 days'. and specify this is for the Inbox folder. Then i goto my user properties into MRM and choose the Mailbox policy i just created titled 'Delete inbox Contents after 180 days' and add it??? My concern is how does My Mailbox Policy reference the 'delete after 180 days' setting i placed on the Default Managed Folder?? What happens if i want one mailbox to retain for 180 days and the other for 360 days? I only have one setting under Default Managed folder and it is for 180 days. Damn, i'm a little lost i think i'm missing a peice of the puzzle and that's why i'm having issues understanding the functionality. It's about that time of day when i want to toss the laptop through the window. I thank you again for your help and patience. powershell one liner from technet: Set-Mailbox -Identity Chris -ManagedFolderMailboxPolicy "My Managed Folder Mailbox Policy" quote:

If you want different settings for different people, then you need to create additional Default Managed Folders. If you right click in Default Managed Folders and choose New, then follow the wizard then you will see what happens. If you select Type INBOX then the policy will apply to that folder. Give it a name that describes it. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125245(EXCHG.80).aspx Then create a new policy that includes that new Default Managed Folder that you have just created. Finally then set that policy on the user account that applies to the user. Basically the Default Managed Folders are the options you can have in the policy. The policy is a collection of options, so it could just be applied to Inbox for some users, but could also be applied to Deleted items for others. Then you set the policy that you want to apply to the various user accounts as required. Simon.

Sembee, It's all falling into place now. Thanks so much. I don't think it could have been explained any better. Have a good evening.
