My SBS 2003 Exchange is not sending mail every couple of days. I have rebuilt the offline address book (to no avail), the only thing that seems to get her going is a restart. Upon restarting she will run perfectly for about 2 - 3 days, then the same thing will happen again. the mail is sent from the client (outlook 2003), hits the exchange server, then sits there in limbo. The error logs are generating no chatter at all, error free. this is causing quite a fiasco at the client as you all can imagine. here are some error log entries: ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Event Type: Information Event Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store Event Category: General Event ID: 1216 Date: 9/6/2007 Time: 10:00:55 AM User: N/A Computer: ASIA Description: The Exchange store 'First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (ASIA)' is limited to 18 GB. Hiya chap, did this problem start after you installed Service Pack 2 for Exchange? Also does stuff start working again after running a net stop smtpsvc and then a net start SMTPsvc from the command line Cheers A

Thanks for the quick response. I installed Exchange SP2 back in July, the problem just arose about 1 month ago. So I assume its unrelated, however we all know about assumptions. I have looked at the services running previously and never noticed SMTP service stopped. I will try to start / stop the service next time the event occurs. Do you have any idea why this would happen? Cheers,

Hiya mate, from my understanding of the error, it normally is a result on a topology malfunction - for example, changes to exchange, a restore from backup which involves system state, a change to the SMTP servers in the ESM, which when replicated via the DS2MB service into AD corrupts. Have there been any significant issues in the last few months? Cheers A

Nothing serious at all, no system errors before exchange started acting up. The server had been error free due to pro active maintenance and daily check ups. That is until this pesky thing showed up. No backup restoration / critical system errors.... ><

Hiya mate, another suggestion that I have is to disable the default SMTP virtual server - then create another SMTP Virtual Server with the same configuration (including IP address) - then update the relevant areas in Exchange (SMTP connectors and bridge heads) and then see what happens - I am getting the feeling that this is a Metabase to Directory service issue. Cheers A

Mr. Grogan, Still having the same troubles, I attempted to recreate the Virtual SMTP Server to no avail. However the default smtp server had the "all unassigned" selection checked as opposed to the exact IP. Seems to be the only way I can get her to work is by restarting, and that only lasts about 1 day. Please Advise, Absolutely Bonkers In Seoul ;)

Over the weekend underwent and NDR attack. Fixed that. Shortly there after exchange stopped working entirely. Rebuild Default SMTP and Connectors. Exchange began working. This morning, the same issue again, could it be xexch? Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: SMTP Protocol Event ID: 7004 Date: 9/18/2007 Time: 10:12:39 AM User: N/A Computer: ASIA Description: This is an SMTP protocol error log for virtual server ID 1, connection #3. The remote host "xx.xx.xx.xx", responded to the SMTP command "xexch50" with "504 Need to authenticate first ". The full command sent was "XEXCH50 2628 2 ". This will probably cause the connection to fail. For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

THE ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED. AS IT TURNED OUT THE EMAIL A/V WAS MESSING WITH THE OUTGOING MAIL. IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE AVAST! ON YOUR SERVER SET UP, BE SURE TO CONFIGURE THE SERVER DEPLOYMENT TOOL CORRECTLY IN ORDER TO ENSURE EVERYTHING IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER ;) THANKS A.
