I am currently installing a 2 node active-passive SCC cluster. All the tests
I performed having created the cluster in Windows Clustering were fine. I
then try to install the active mailbox server role on the active server in
the cluster, and the setup fails on the Network Name.
In Cluster Administrator, everything is fine apart from the group with the
name of the cluster I selected during installation and the Network Name.
I repetaed the installation having a DNS record for the cluster name and it
again failed.

Here is the info:
Error:
Cluster Common Failure Exception : Failed to bring cluster resource Network
Name (clustername) in cluster group clustername online. Cluster Common
Failure Exception : The group or resource is not in the correct state to
perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F)

I have since enable NetBIOS on the public NICs, deleted and recreated DNS records, used a different name etc, and it all ends up with the same sorry outcome.

Please help ASAP, this is very urgent.

Are you running SP2 for Windows 2003? - if so have you disabled RSS and the chimney offload?

Have a look here: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/07/18/446400.aspx

What are the specific settings for the Network name in the cluster admin tool (all tabs) including the timeouts?

Cheers

A

I am indeed running Windows Server 2003 SP2. Havenīt as yet disabled RSS and chimney offload, I shall check that in a moment.

In the properties of Network Name, I have:
General tab: Network Name (name of virtual Exch server,) possible owners: the 2 nodes of my cluster. Nothing else selectes, state is failed.
Dependencies: IP Address (Exch cluster name), Resource Type: IP Address
Advanced: Restart, affect the group (threshold: 3 period: 900,) Looks alive: use value from resource type, Is Alive: Use value from resource type, Pending timeout: 180 seconds.
Parameters: Name: name of Exch cluster, DNS must succees selected, and Enable Kerberos Auth selected.

Many thanks for your reply.

Just tried the tips about RSS and chimney offload, restarting the server. Tried to start the Network Name resource and it tried hard for about 30 seconds then failed - a bit better than before when it failed after 1 second or so.
Just to let you know, if I try to uninstall Exchange, the roles list marks the server as a passive cluster node. Any cause for concern?

Cool, the cluster config checks out - let me know about the RSS and Chimney stuff.

I will be around for a bit.

Hello mate, ok when you installed Exchange I take it you performed the install on the primary node first and then the passive (silly question but have to ask).

Also, if you increase the timeout value on both the NN and SA to say 240 seconds does it come online? - I have seen things about this before where it can take ages for the resources to come online.

Have you adjusted the RSS and COL on both nodes?

An finally - when you went to uninstall did it mark what you would expect the Primary node to be the passive.

Sorry for all the questions.

Cheers

Donīt apologise for all the questions I appreciate a great deal all the help you are giving me.

1. Yes, I move all the resources to the active node, and attempted to install the active exchange node there. This is as far as I got due to this problem, I didnīt continue with the second node. I think this first node installed itself only as passive.
2. I have not adjusted this figure, as I canīt see where it should be done. Neither of these resources appears to have any additional tabs to do it, although I had read somewhere else it may be beneficial to do it. In the resource types node, there is just a main screen for each, not like the Network Name, for example.
3. I only adjusted the figures on the first node. I shall therefore do it also on the second node.
4. Yes, the primary node was marked as passive. As part of my uninstall procedure, what I was doing was that first, deleting the Exchange resources from Cluster Admin, deleting Exchange related info from the registry. Should NetBios be enabled on the public interface of each server? Deployment guide says to disable it, but the Technet website says to enable it. Should I create DNS record for the cluster before installing or should the setup take care of that?

Thanks again.

Hiya mate, ok.

1. In the cluster admin can you select the properties for the Network name - click on the "Advanced Tab" - at the bottom your will see an entry for "Pending Timeout" - change that from 180 to 300.

2. Do the same for the System Attendant Resource

3. Can you change the RSS and COL figures on both nodes

4. Can you perhaps provide us with a run through of the installation steps you performed one by one.

5. On the public (not heart beat - or private) from my understanding NETBIOS should be enabled and the public LAN connection should have the highest priority.

Cheers

1. Done
2. I canīt seem to find the tab for this one. In my console System Attendant appears only under the Resource Types node and has only one tab, which doesnīt contain that field.
3. Done.
4. As for the installation:
4.1 Installed the prerequisites for Exchange on both nodes
4.2 Configured the NICs as per Large Deployment Guide (ie disabled NetBIOS on private NIC, changed bindings order etc etc)
4.3 Created a new cluster with the first server, connected to the 2nd server using a crossover cable, speed manually set.
4.4 Added the second node to the cluster, checked the cluster health etc and turned off server to make sure the resources transferred correctly.
4.5 Tried to install the SCC active node on the active cluster node, and saw the error stated. Foolishly the first time I tried it I attempted to use the same name and IP as the windows cluster, then tried again when it failed with another IP and another name.
4.6 Tried a variety of things including: enabling netBios on the public NIC of each node, deleted and manually created DNS records for the Exch cluster, deleted PTR records for another server which previously had the same IP, deleted WINS records for another server which previously had the same IP, restarted both servers, deleted and uninstalled Exchange again.

I have full documents in Spanish of the installation procedure which I could send you, and you could perhaps revise the screenshots, but that is the overall process.

Heya Johnny - I have to admit my spanish is not that bad - but I might struggle a little!  - with the changes to the timeout has this made a difference? (although any difference it likely to be waiting longer.

Also, I need to go offline soon - but I will be back online tomorrow in the forum - will you be around? - if so happy to pick up then!

Let me know

Actually - just re-read your last post - there is something that worries me - can you send over the document with the screen shots?

I will be going offline in about 5 mins, however you can find my e-mail address in my profile (essentially it is my MSN address) - fire it over and I will have a look.

Cheers

Hi again,

Thanks for your continiung help.
I did indeed change the times, but it hasnīt made any difference. I am gonna try and uninstall Exchange via the comand line and install it again. It is all very strange as the Windows Cluster was working fine. The one other time I had done the same installation it went quite smoothly. The only thing i remember on both occasions was an RPC warning in the windows cluster log upon creating the cluster.

I doubt I will be on for any great time tomorrow, I might try to look out for you anyway. Would it be any bother if I send a mail to the address here? The client is gonna get agitated if I keep consuming hours without progress.

Thanks, and have a top weekend, dude.

Yes of course - you are welcome to e-mail me.
The thing that I am concerned about it the naming issue that you encountered.
PLease send as much info as you have, and I will look at it - if you have any data from Event logs that would also be great.

Let me know how you also get along with the un-install.

- spk tomorrow or next week

Cheers

The problem was finally solved. I noticed that on both nodes of the cluster, in the System log in Event Viewer, there were messages from the Cluster Service I had overlooked. The gist of the message was that the Cluster Service account I had created (as a domain account, local admins on each node) didnīt have permission to join computers to the domain (a strange one, I guess the Exchange cluster is adding a computer object to the domain, so at to appear so to the clients) and Bobīs your uncle, howīs your father, it installed without any fuss. To clear the previous failed installation I ran setup.exe, deselected the roles I had installed, cleared the Exchange info under the System node of the registry and deleted the remaining cluster resources created by Exchange setup.

Thanks a lot for the help!
