Can the SCR source machine have the CAS/HT roles installed on it? I thought that I was told at traing that it could, but I have read that the SOURCE and TARGET can only have the mailbox role installed. Can someone please clarify this? I need to make some decisions quickly related to how many servers to buy for this deployment. Thanks. -asmcbride

thanks. any idea why MS is publishing that the source requirements for SCR include that the machine only have the Mailbox role installed? I've seen this listed on several different online publications...

Link to that? That's definitely not true. The only time SCR ever requires Mailbox only is when you're doing SCR Target on a Standby Cluster.

i think you saw some articles that told about having SCR in the CCR environment . that is if we have CCR and we need to have the SCR then the source for SCR can have mail box role only

this is from msexchangeteam.com ------------- The starting point for SCR is called the source, which is any storage group, except a recovery storage group, on any of the following: - A standalone mailbox server (with or without LCR enabled).
- A clustered mailbox server in a single copy cluster.
- A clustered mailbox server in a CCR environment.
--------------------------------------- The only listed options include the 2 clustered options which have to be mailbox only and the other options specifically states standalone mailbox server.

Yes, and a standalone mailbox server is a server that is not clustered and can have any role installed on it. You're just looking at as it means it's just a single server with mailbox role only on it. But I do see how it can be a bit confusing with them saying standalone mailbox role. But trust us, we know what it means!

perfect, thanks for the clarification. next question...who can help me with storage questions for the mailbox machine? the online calculator is way too overwhelming. current setup is: single exchange box, 300 mailboxes, 3 mail databases and 1 public folder database for a total combined size of 125GB. If costs permit I was planning to do LCR. I used the Dell online calculator and it spec'd out a single server w/ (2) MD3000 storage devices which is just way too much... -asmcbride

one more thing - can the SCR target have the CAS/HT roles installed as well? IF not immediately installed, could they be installed after it was moved to the active status? Basically, I want to know if there is a way to have a fully redundant server with the 3 roles installed so that if my production server with the 3 roles installed fails I can move to this backup server. If I have CAS/HT on the production machine and it fails and I cant have these roles on the SCR Target then that isnt much help. Would having these roles installed on the target machine create any confusion in the exchange environment such as the message routing or access? -asmcbride

Yes the SCR target can have CAS/HUB/MBX as long as it's not a Standby Cluster. So the same applies for a Source and a Target. As for storage, if it's overwhelming, ask specific questions or hire a consultant to come up with the entire storage plan.
