I have a problem on an exch2000 box. The SMTP service runs after the box starts and then just stops functioning. The services report running and there is NO event logs. The server also does not accept any or can create any SMTP sessions on port 25. A user cannot even send a mail to himself. The AV is Disabled. If you try to stop smtp it can�t and gives error 1053. You have to kill the inetinfo service to get it started again. However no mail is transmitted. The queues in the single exch smtp server does not create connections an messages stays in the �awaiting AD lookup� folder. It runs for a few minutes and then dies again. I ran the smtp reinstall EXE in SP3 support tools but it works for about an hour after the restart. From the system you can make changes to settings and connectors that will replicate. If I stop all services and restart them the system still does not send mail. Even local. A restart works for a while which makes me think the RPC service might be a root cause. However other AD replication and services work fine. A reload is my last solution, but I want to avoid it.
