Forgive me for the newb question, but I'm having a little trouble with SMTP connectors and virtual servers.  I've been reading about them and I understand what they do theoretically.  I don't understand how they're set up, though.  I inferred that you would create them manually, but on ours it seems that they're created dynamically...at least some of them.  Could someone explain to me some of the things going on here?  Especially, the things that say shoplocalalerts.com and things like that.  Also, where are SMTP virtual servers located in ESM?

What you are seeing is the queues to each outside domain through a single SMTP connector.  It would appear that you are allowing Exchange to use DNS to send the outside mail, so you will see each of the domains with which it has attempted to communicate.

Those outbound messages can include NDRs from spoofed spam messages.

Is that a bad thing?  Or does that just mean that I'm using DNS as opposed to a smart host?  The same queues weren't there today, but it looks like there are legitimate emails from our users in them.  I didn't set up our Exchange, so I'm just trying to understand everything about it...and also study for the certification.  I also know that you can set up smtp virtual servers to route outbound email, but smtp connectors are preferred because they're more flexible with the settings configuration.  What would be a reason to set up an smtp virtual server?

It's not necessarily a bad thing.  It is a side-effect of using DNS instead of a smarthost.  If you sent all the outbound mail to a smarthost, all the messages would go out through a single queue and the smarthost would have to manage failed NDR attempts.

If a lot of spam is allowed to reach your Exchange server and causes it to send out a lot of NDRs, it can possibly adversely affect performance.

You can consider another SMTP Virtual Server if...

...  you run into a situation where you need a configuration that requires authentication and one does not
...  you have an application that requires a specific SMTP configuration

If you look at the configuration options for SMTP Virtual Servers versus SMTP Connectors, you may get a better sense of it.  Additionally I highly recommend Jim McBee's books on Exchange (search Amazon for his name).
