I have trying to block a couple of IP addresses in
Default SMTP Virtual Server>Properties>Access>Connection. I stopped and started the Default SMTP Virtual Server but it doesn't seem to have taken effect. Do I need to reboot the server?
I did wonder if it was because it is behind a firewall which forwards all SMTP traffic and the filter thinks that this is the originating IP and passes it (even though the originating IP address appears in the Internet headers of the e-mails)
Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi,

It could very well be that your firewall is the sender of all e-mails received by the exchange server and that you therefore can't filter by IP addresses.

You can verify this by enabling SMTP logging and look into the log.

This might help with filtering options: http://msexchange.org/tutorials/Sender-Recipient-Filtering.html

Thanks for the reply, however, this is Exchange 2000 not 2003!
