Hi Good Day.

I'm having some issues and need some of your opnions.

I have an IIS SMTP Virtual Server to receive emails from the Internet and "Limit Message Size to (KB)" was set to 6144.

4.1MB is okay but when sending around 4.5MB I got and NDR message.
"552 4.3.1 Message size exceeds fixed maximum message size"

I sent the message using GMAIL going to my work Email.

Any idea what I am missing here?

oh... Exchange 2003 Enterprise environment.
IIS SMTP Virtual Server is on W2003 Ent R2 as well.

Thanks in Advance.

The encoding of the attachment increases the size of the message going across the internet by about 30% or so. You don't see it internally, but you will externally.

Hi John,

oh its 30%?

I also read about it, but it was 20%., anyway I will try to increase it.

cause the 6144 if my calculation is correct is 20% of 5120 which is set for 5MB Limit.

I will try to increase it to 30%.(of 5,120)

I'll increase it to 6,656

Thanks John for the time. I'll feedback soon.

Hi John,

Tested and working fine now but added additional bytes tho.

set to 30% of 5,120(5MB) + 512 [
*Tested + 256 it failed]

before a 5.1MB is allowed to pass in our SMTP Virtual Server.

Thanks

Emman

Base64 This encoding algorithm is based primarily on the privacy-enhanced mail (PEM) standard defined in RFC 1421. Base64 encoding uses the 64-character alphabet encoding algorithm and output padding characters defined by PEM to encode the message body data. A Base64 encoded message is typically 33 percent larger than the original message. Base64 encoding creates a predictable increase in message size and is optimal for binary data and non-US-ASCII text.

try 9984 - which should put you well over. then if that works, start stepping down by 256 or 512 chunks.

LOL - looks like we crossed in the transport stream... glad you got it fixed.

hahaha... don't want this to happen cause it might get abused by customers sending large attachments, it brings much pressure on our Exchange.

I'm planning to decrease this one to 3MB waiting for approval.
5MB is just too big as attachments specially coming from the Internet side.

Thanks John for the help.
