Hi everybody,

I want to use SMTP with SSL on the exchange 2007 to get secure SMTP access for clients to this box. VPN is not an option.
I enabled the cert already via "Enable-ExchangeCertificate -Services SMTP"
Still I don't see any service when I look for port 485.
What I'm missing? Any help highly appreciated.

SMTP is already encrypted by default when using Exchange 2007 SMTP.  It's only really plain text when doing SMTP to SMTP from server to server communication over the Internet Send Connector.  If using Client to Server using POP3/IMAP4, you will need to configure your Outlook clients to send over port 587 and specify that your Outlook client needs to authenticate and use a secured (SSL/TLS) connection.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996395(EXCHG.80).aspx

You will see that the ReceiveConnector is set up with ExchangeUsers is using TLS.  So if a user authenticates to the ExchangeBox, it will automatically be using TLS.  The only way to really allow anonymous non-TLS communications for SMTP from a client is to set up a new client connector with Anonymous.

Hope that helps.

Edit:  By the way, I just finished writing a blog entry in regards to this very question.  The article is entitled, "Client to Server Secure SMTP Connectivity in Exchange Server 2007."
