I'm assuming when you say the existing server will be retired that you plan to retire the hardware. This is very straightforward. Build your new Back-end server and migrate all the mailboxes to it. Build your new Front-end server. Turn off all the Exchange services on the old server for a while to make sure everything is working correctly. Remove the old server from the Exchange Organization You shouldn't have to modify the clients, but after you migrate a mailbox, it will need to be launched so that it finds the new server. Exchange/AD is smart enough to recognize a new mailbox location when Outlook is started. What issues were you anticipating?

I was afraid that I'd have to reconfigure clients? And actually, I made a different posting, as I discovered that my problem was much simpler than that. It was just that the way I read the front-end/back-end architecture, that if I changed things around, if the users came in through a front-end server setup with load-balancing, I'd never have to reconfigure client connections in the future. That is what I was thinking.
