Hi I am fairly new to exchange 2007, i have dabbled in 2003, Just set up my first 2007 server, and i am unable to send mail, is this because i have not set up a send connecter, i do not remember this feature in 2003, are there any good articles showing how to set one up, and understanding what they are. Thanks John

did you also install the edge transport server on a seperate windows 2003 64bit server? You this for outgoing mail or you have to hack around if you want everything on one server

This would be an insecure way of using Exchange 2007. However if you google you should find that there are way of creating Send Connectors on the Hib Transport that will allow you to send amd receive mail without using an Edge Transport Server. However i would advise you to deploy an Edge Transport server... if you have enough RAM and Free Disk Space think about using VMWARE 64Bit (free version) and this will allow you to deploy the Edge Transport in a virtual environment.

Whether you are deploying Exchange 5.5, 2000, 2003, 2007, Lotus Notus, ect the server that hosts the Mailboxes should not be exposed directly to the internet and should never directly receive e-mail. It is always better to have that role perfomed by a front-end server, edge transport server or a simple server with a smtp engine running on it and ideally deployed on the DMZ. The less you expose to the internet the better. Also if you plan to deploy AV or Anti-spam solutions at SMTP level atleast they can be sorted out at the gateway rather than comming into your mailbox server.
