Hi there

We also have the requirement to send emails with attachments larger than 5Mb.

However, when a lot of users sends out emails with large attachments, it can quickly choke our 64k Diginet line.

I have found that Exchange 2003 does have a feature with which to deliver all outgoing mails above a specific size after-hours.

(I haven't installed SP2 yet, and have no idea whether the steps will differ on an SP2-enabled installation)

Here's how to do so :

1. Open Exchange System Manager.

2. Navigate to Internet Mail, right-click, select Properties.

3. Go to the Delivery Options tab, and enable the Use different delivery times for oversize messages, and also be sure to fill in the value if your requirement differ from the default (which is 2000Kb).

4. Now you can decide which schedule to select. I have set my schedule for after 18:00 in the afternoon, right through to 06:00 in the mornings when e-mail traffic is at its lowest.

5. If you want to see the status of the queue, you can navigate to the Queues folder in Exchange System Manager, and you will see that the emails which is on schedule, will show up as Scheduled in the State column.

If it's an important (Boss) e-mail which needs to go through ASAP, then you can also force it.

This is another good feature which will help you to manage your slow connection all the better.

You could also mention restricting the outbound connections. By default Exchange will try and make as many connections up to the value in the outbound connections value in the SMTP properties (default is 1000). We had issues when changing from an old mail server to exchange in that the old one was so slow it only drip feed the mail queue. When we forced the mail through the exchange server which was about 100x better,. our connection froze when a mail shot was sent. By restricting the max connections to 20, if a mailshot of 300+ emails is sent it only processes 20 at a time which it handles.
