Hi all

I have just started learning about Server side of things and I am abit confused and curious....

If I install windows server 2008 on a machine and then can I install Server 2008 and Exchange and AD on the same machine/OS?

i understand they are three different things, do i keep them running on different machines?

If anyone has good starting point reading material please let me know

Sorry to sound confusing I am just confused.....

thanks

Sounds like you're either just learning all this stiff or you're working for a small organization.

With that in mind you can certainly put Windows Server 2008 and Exchange 2010 on the same server. That Windows server can be a Domain Controller.

Do some research maybe on Small Business Server. That is a single-box solution that Microsoft sell into the smaller markets.

Take a look at the pre-reqs: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691354.aspx

Hi

Thanks for the reply and sorry for replying back.....

Well I have been working in Desktop support for some years now and I want to move up and learn about servers and exchange...

I am good with AD but Exchange I only know about mailbox creation and few things around mailboxes.....

I am not sure where to start from on learning about server.... I am going to buy a powerful machine and install virtual servers and other machines on it....

but what do i learn first? exchagne? servers? AD?

thanks
pp

It really depends upon your level of interest and your preferred method of learning. There are books and classes and other teaching venues out there. Decide what you want to do with the technology and look for the appropriate level of instruction and cost.

Sorry to be vague, but I don't know how else to respond. Many of us started out having to support an existing environment, then were asked to do more as our knowledge and experience increased.
