Hey!

I currently have two servers - One running Win 2k Server acting as the PDC. This server is currently acting as a fileserver, proxy and mail server.

The second server has no purpose atm. So, i have decided to move the mail and proxy to the second server.

My question is...Can i install Exchang on the second server and it will still communicate with the PDC (ie creating mail-boxes when a user account is created)?

Thanks in advance
David

What are your plans exactly ? Are you just going to install Exchange 5.5 or are you moving up to 2000/2003 ?

What OS runs on the second server ?

And are you at the moment using Exchange 2000 ?

If yes just install the new server into the current Exchange organization, then everything will be ok.

Yes but not what you mean. I do have a server running exchange at the moment but i am intending to move it onto a seperate server which will host all internet related services such as Proxy/Cache (ISA Server), Web and FTP and also Mail using Exchange 2000. The PDC will be obsolved of all these tasks since they are being moved to a completly seperate server.

Basically what i need to know is that when i have my root mail server not on the main server (PDC), the AD will be updated to allow me to create new user accounts which also creates the correct mailboxes on the mail server?

Thanks in advance,
David

Just to address your basic question -- when you install Exchange on your new server included will be Active Directory Users and Computers interface.

That is to say after a default install when you click (on the new server) Start->Programs->Microsoft Exchange you'll see choices of Active Directory Cleanup Wizard, Active Directory Users and Computers, Migration Wizard and System Manager.

It's on this Active Directory Users and Computers on the mail server where on the user properties you'll see tabs for the Exchange functions (Exchange General, Exchange Adv, etc.)

And of course all other user properties, logon, passwords, etc. are linked to your AD machines.

David,

Like JeffJa states - yes you will be able to access AD in exactly the same way, only requirement is you got to have the proper ports (in order for AD, DNS, SMTP etc. to work) open between the new server and your AD domain.

Yeah. The two servers are on the same local network so comms shouldnt be a problem.

So if i make a new user account on the main server (the one not running exchange), it will will create the mail-box on the server running exchange aslong at the AD on the mail server is synchronised with the PDC?

Yes, it will work in the way you describe. But in order to create mailboxes you must use the AD Users and Computers (ADUC) snap-in which gets installed by Exchange! So in order to add new users with mailboxes (these are not created automatically!) you should run the Exchange installation disks on the other DC, choose Custom Install and install the management tools. That will install an Exchange program group on your start menu with a new ADUC. Always use that one to administrate your users.

Btw, you don't need an AD on the Exchange server, i.e. make it a domain controller. Just make sure that network connectivity works between the Exchange server and the DC.
