Can someone please answer a couple of questions.

If i am wanting set exchange server up to download pop3 email via a pop3 conector and store it in the exchange. Allow users on the lan to connect via outlook, Also share a mailbox between the people that are on the lan.

WHAT DO I ACTUALLY NEED?

on the configure your server wizard do i really need to install these

domain controller?
dns server ?

I mean im not going to be pointing a .com or anything at them all im going to be doing is having the server as server.local and downloading emails via pop3 for the moment. My outgoing smtp connection is already setup with smtp connector pointing to my isp's smtp.

Im very new to exchange but have alot of time under my belt from web design/admin etc etc so ill get the hang of this pretty quickly i just need a hand making it onto the first rung of the ladder.

cheers

You can't have Exchange without active directory. Active Directory requires DNS and a lot of other things.
Exchange is also not really designed to be used with a POP3 connector - all POP3 connectors have a number of flaws. Exchange is designed to work where it is receiving email by SMTP and that is how you will see Exchange working to its best.

ok. I understand smtp is the ultimate way to go (native) My understanding also is pop3 "will work" for the time being. I am of coarse not ready to take the full leap and let my exchange server take over by altering mx records etc. I was just wondering if/how i work around this problem and use exchange without any mx/a record changes etc.

thanks for your response.

Exchange isn't really designed to be used in a piecemeal approach. Once you add the clients to Exchange they will try and use Exchange for everything. If you don't setup the DNS correctly then you will find email will not be delivered.
If you receive email that is BCC then the POP3 connector will almost certainly be unable to deliver it. While the POP3 method works, it isn't very satisfactory solution and should only be used short term.
