OK, I have been running exchange 5.5 for a very long time and just now have a need to have separate containers for a split in our company. Our company is now two separate companies and I need a user in Company A to only see Company A people in the address list (unless the user selects in a new mail message which address list he/she wants to use). Is this possible? Thanks.

Lee.

I am not in the office to quickly look up the documentaion but it sounds like you need to set up what is called address book views.

Do a search on microsoft.com/support for configuring address book views and this should accomplish what you want.

Hope this helps

Address Book Views worked but I would like to have users from Company A have the Company A address book view as the default address book when composing a new mail message instead of Global Address List. I would like Global Address list available, but not the default. Thanks.

In the mail profile on a client, you can alter the search order for the address containers - it's on the Addressing tab. But it's client-specific.

Usually the best way to use ABVs is to make the GAL unavailable to everyone, and then control which ABV they get depending on some filtering. Are you sure you need everyone to still see the GAL?

OK, so here is the situation. I have created three view: Company A, Company B, and Others. Others houses all the custom recipients that are needed by both companies. I don't need the GAL anymore since all accounts are either in Company A, B, or Other, so how do I get rid of the GAL in the drop down list? All I want to show when a user clicks on the drop down box is:

Company A
Company B
Other.

Right now is shows:

Global Address List
My Company Name
..Address Book View
.....Company A
.....Company B
.....Other
..Main Office
.....Recipients

I used periods to denote spaces and again thanks to everyone for their help.

On the Permissions tab of the GAL object in the directory hierarchy, you need to allocate (say) the service account to have Search permissions (this will change the role to Custom). The way Exchange Search permissions work is that setting them for an account or group implicitly removes them from all other accounts and groups. It's bizzare, but it works.

Zbnet thanks for all your help, but I am still having problems. How do you access the permissions tab for the GAL? I have gone into tools->options->permissions and selected Show Permissions for all objects and I still don't see how to edit permissions on the GAL.

Thanks.

Sorry, I mis-spoke myself (or shoudl that be mistyped myself)?

Of course the GAL object itself has no Permissions tab - you're right. It inherots its permissions directly from the Organisation object, which does has a Permissions tab. Set your Service Account (or other essentially unused account) to have the Search rights here. This will prevent all other accounts accessing the GAL.

Then you need to set explicit search permissions on the ABVs that you want people to be able to view, again using NT groups or similar.

Thanks. Now users can only see what they are allowed to see in the GAL.
