Greetings all,

We've an Exchange box which we run purely in 'hosted exchange' mode (i.e. RPC over HTTPS).  It is also the AD, and nothing else on the LAN uses its AD.  We need a disaster recovery solution that involves the very least amount of expertise, and is relatively easy to document / be performed.

There are a small number of users (less than 30).  If someone could provide feedback and fill in the gaps on the following options, I'd be most grateful. There are gaps in my understanding surrounding VSS, any points would be appreciated.

Option 1
We run a nightly VSS to a second hard disk.  If the server dies (motherboard fried, struck by lightening, etc.) we install Win 2008 onto a new server, and run the VSS restore function.  Will this also restore AD and any other roles the Exchange box previously performed?  Does the VSS restore everything that was installed on the volume (including the previous version of the OS)?

Option 2
We make one of the SBS 2003 boxes on the LAN a backup AD server. If the server fails, we rebuild, install Win 2008 and then run exchange setup.exe with the /restore switch to rebuild the server configuration from the AD.

Option 3
We configure an identical server (down to the Mobo, CPU, etc.).  If the primary goes down (and we have at least one of the RAIDed disks) we just transfer the HDD to the backup server that was waiting in the wings and boot it up.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated - but the goal is to keep it simple and as understandable by as many non-technical people who may be able to execute it with just phone assistance.

Thanks,

Duncan
