My Exchange server has virtually ground to a halt and is sending tens of thousands of messages to the bad mail queue. Some get through to the send queue if addressed from @mydomain.
This continues even after disconnecting the server from the network!
The only way I can get the server back up to speed is to stop the SMTP service.
I have checked for a virus but it appears clean.
Any ideas??

Sounds as if the Exchange server is used as a relay server. I would seriously consider putting effort into re-checking configuration and make sure unauthorised relaying is stopped!
