Has anyone witnessed these types of bounce backs? I'm receiving the bounce
back when I try to send an email to a specific client. As strange as it sounds it
usually gets bounced back when I use the auto complete feature in Outlook 2003.
When I delete the auto complete entry and then reenter the email address by hand
the email usually goes through to the recipient without a problem.

I have deleted the Outlook.NK2 file and I still have the problem.

I am running Windows 2003 Small Business Server with Exchange 2003.

Listed below is the NDR that I receive when the email does not go through
followed by the header information of that email. Please notice that the second line
of the email header information is “From: postmaster@mydomain.com”. This leads
me to believe that the email is getting bounced back from my Exchange 2003
server.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Howard

I am going to move this post to the message routing forum in hopes of getting a response there.

Your understanding of how Exchange (and SMTP servers in general) work with NDRs isn't quite correct.

The fact that your server is in the NDR does not mean it is your server with the problem.
All that means is the NDR was generated by that server.
The most effective way of dealing with errors is to reject them at the point of delivery, therefore forcing the sending server to generate the NDR.
Based on what you have posted, I would still suspect the problem is with the remote server, and it is rejecting the message at the point of delivery.
SMTP logging will show if there was a connection to the remote server or not.
Furthermore, if the problem is sporadic, then SMTP logging may also show you if it is connecting to the same server every time. What can sometimes happen with larger service providers is that they are using a cluster, and one of those cluster member's hasn't been updated correctly.

Simon.

Simon:

Thank you for your response.

When I perform an nslookup for their domain (see below) I notice that two of their mail servers are no longer active (30 and 40). Could this be the problem and if so, then why aren’t other people having the same problem that I am having?

The mail3 and mail2 addresses will resolve to an ip address. The backupmx1 and backupmx2 addresses can not be found (see below)

You are right. I don’t know exchange very well but I am all that I have to help resolve this issue.

I sincerely thank you for your help in this matter.

If the server doesn't respond then you would get a different error. Relay denied errors need a valid connection to the server. Therefore the errors you have seen are not related to the servers not responding.

Simon:

Thank you for the information.

I assume that the only way to determine where the problem is is to set up logging.
This is something that I have not done before so I will have to read up on the subject.
