I have the same problem. The sever has worked fine without any problems for 5-6 months, and suddenly the store.exe is using 100% of the CPU.
Please help us out!
Im running Exchange 2000 SP3 on Windows 2000 SP3.

thanks but I already have the Latest Service (SP3) installed, and i'm using Norton Antivirus for Exchange which I have turned off (that didnt solve the problem either).
Could it be a corrupted databse ? What can have caused this ?
The database harddrive is constantly being used, with a small break for like 2 secs and then its being used again, it almost sounds like it was in a kind of a loop.

Have you set your virus scanner to scan drive m: (or whatever drive you have the Exchange IFS mapped to)? as if so this can cause some problems. Its never recommended to allow virus scanning on these volumes.

No, Im aware of this, and never had any virus scanner to scan M: on the exchange server.
The server seems to work okay, but it is very slow because of the cpu usage.

I however have a weekendly virus scan on C: on my front-end server, but this wouldnt do anything to the back-end server ?
Im now getting a error: Information Store (1804) 9d986622-5184-4f87-a4c3-578d446e393e: The version store for this instance (0) has reaced its maximum size of 85mb. It is likely that a long running transaction is preventing cleanup of the version store and causing it to build up in size. Updates will be rejected until the long running transaction has been completely commited or rolled back.
Possible long running transaction:
SessionId: 0x7FE43920 Session-Context: 0x00000000 Session-Context Threadid: 0x00000868
And now suddenly it seems like the problem is gone and the CPU usage is low again. What has happend ???

Check if inetinfo is also mounting to 100 percent .Ckeck the badmail folder in vsi1.If filled with junk mails, delete them, stop relaying.
If inetinfo is causing problem, stop smtp in IIS.
Will work.Check it out

Event ID 1022 is due to the user(s) trying to log on to their mailbox while its being moved to a different server. Is a mailbox move happening at present?

You should never stop SMTP on an Exchange sk server as it is the native transport for Exchange 2000.

only store.exe was using 100% cpu. inetinfo was normal. I had 7mb of mail in the badmail dir. Im not relaying.
No, not moving any mailboxes. To me it seems like the online defrag was still running from yesterday. It goes of 11.15 PM.
Im going to run an offline defrag on the database.

store.exe
You might observe an ever-increasing number of handles for the Inetinfo process and an ever-increasing number of files in the Inetpub\Mailroot\Queue folder. These symptoms occur when mail is sent via ASP scripts using server.createobject("cdonts.newmail"), the Application Protection setting is set to High on the Home Directory tab in the IIS Administrator Web site properties, and the SMTP virtual server's Smarthost setting is incorrect.
Cause This is caused by an invalid Smarthost setting.
Workaround To work around this issue, correct the Smarthost setting:
Start the Internet Information Services snap-in.
Click the appropriate server.
Right-click the default SMTP virtual server, and then click Properties.
Click the Delivery tab.
Click Advanced.
Correct the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and Smarthost setting.
Click OK to close all the dialog boxes.
