Greetings -
I'm running into the same problems it appears others are having as well - emails stuck in the queue. Let me run down a few things to give you a better idea as to what is going on....
First, I can get emails from other domains (off of my system) to the correct mail box. So, I'm not having an MX problem receiving.
Second, I can send messages to email addys on my exchange machine (ie - they do not leave my network)
Third, I do not have external DNS set up in the advanced properties second of my SMTP server (Incase anyone asks)
Basically, I send an email from my system to my Yahoo email and the message just sits in the Queue with a connection state of "Retry".
I thought that, maybe, this may have to do with the fact that this machine is setup with NAT, and the messages could not get out on port 25... BUT I place this machine in a DMZ and the messages would still not send.
Really would appreciate some help here. Thanks! Van

Event Type: Information Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store Event Category: Transfer Out Of Gateway Event ID: 2088 Date: 6/23/2003 Time: 5:25:07 PM User: N/A Computer: server Description: The wakeup send thread on database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (server)" will retry submitting the message in 5000 msec.

Greetings -
No... mine is actually telling me that
"An internal DNS error caused a failure to find the remote server."
BUT - all my MX records are fit, I am not using smart host.....

Van,
You're not using ISA Server for your firewall are you? If you are, I believe I have a solution for you. I had to overcome this one myself because I'm using ISA Server.

I am having the same issue as well.
Windows 2000.. SP3 Exchange 2000 SP3.
Most all emails go out.. all emails come in. MX record is good with ISP and not using ISA as firewall.

Is there any solution? I am having the same problem here. About 80% of the messages sent yesterday and today are still sitting in the queue.

An internal DNS error caused a failure to find the remote server indicates that the remote domain has no available MX record. Use NSLOOKUP to locate the remote domain's MX record
If you find the MX record, use TELNET to communicate to the remote domain (Ex: telnet server.domain.com 25) on port 25. This is the same as if Exchange is talking.
Next, use Q153119 (http://support.microsoft.com) to send a test message.
If that fails, try using Netmon to see the communication process.
Be sure that all SMTP Virtual Servers are default value, that there is no SMTP connectors installed, and that there are no 3rd party applications running.

Ok, I finally fixed the issue. (I had been busy as of late, so I had to put this on the back burner).
The Nic was not pointing to the correct DNS server - hence why it could not resolve.
Thanks for all the help.
