Hi Folks, I am in the process of migrate our exhange 2003 server to exchange 2007 but need some help here. currently our environment have front end exchange 2003 and a cluster exchange active/passive 2003. I want to upgrade to 2007 exchange and eliminate the backend cluster so that I only have front and back end server only. 1. what is the correct process to upgrade to 2007 exchange? 2. should I upgrade the front end first or the backend first? 3. do I need to set the configuration parameter of "SuppressStateChanges" to 1 on all server? if someone can outline the correct process of upgrade to 2007 for me that would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Jim

A. i didnt understand the point that u said "eliminate the backend cluster so that I only have front and back end server only" what do u mean by that??? 1- the correct process to migrate is 1st install the Hub Servers then the CAS then move out your ex2k3 front end server than install the mailboxe server, migrate the things from 2k3 to 2k7 the take out the ex2k3 backend server 2- as i mentioned the front end 1st 3- suppressing link state is only valuable if you have more than 1 routing group connector and actually its harmless read more about it here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996728.aspx Thanx

I only want straight forward backend server without the cluster. base on your respond I have to built a new server for frontend then install exchange 2007 hub servers as I can not just do a straight upgrade to the existing box. as for backend server, which is very much the same process as the front end. Bring up a new server then install 2007 mailbox then migrate exchange 2003 over. So there is no way of upgrading the front other than bring up a new box. I have no problem of bring up the new box on the back end but front end I thought I can do a straight upgrade.

my friend the concept of frontend and backend is no longer working in the exchange 2007 systms so forget about it now the exchange 2007 works with server roles Hub Transport: resposible for send and recieving email Client Access: handleing all the client access methods like ActiveSync, OWA, outlook anywhere etc.... Mailserver: is the holder for ur DB and SG Egde: is for security and antispam and AV so as i mentioned install the hub and make sure that the RGS is configured between the ex2k3 and the ex2k7 then the CAS then take out ur ex2k3 FE server then install the Mailbox role and igrate all the things then take out the ex2k3 BE server edge server is totally optional as the Hub Transport role can act the same exchange 2007 doesnt support inplace upgrade coz of the defferent in work mechanisim and ex2k7 only work with 64bit windows so u have to do out of box migration

thanks for clean thing up for me Ahmad Ramadan. I still have one question and hope that you clear up for me as I am not too familiar with the exchange 2007 that is fine if i have to bring up 2 new servers for this migration. so need to install the hub transport and client access for frontend replacement. then install a mailserver for mailbox to migrate BE server. what is RSG? and what is CAS? Once I have the 2003 FE replace with 2007 but still have the 2003 BE, Can I remove the 2003 FE? as the reverse Mail box IP is pointed to the 2003 FE. again thank you for your answer greatly appreciated...

my man u r welcome anytime for any question after u install the 1st hub transport server the installation wizard will ask you about selecting one of the exchange 2003 bridgehead server i think in ur case will be the frontend servers to connect the hub server to it my mistake i meant RGC not RSG how he will connect it? by creating 2 way routing group connector RGC to connect the 2 systems together CAS is the Client Access Server we used to say CAS yes u can remove it but u know i rather not to do so and wait a while just in case u might want to revert back so it will be more easily for u

sure I hope I did not take much of your time. currently, we have and existing environment that run on physical host and we are running out of disk space especially the backend server. We have 2 domain controller and file server, 2003 FE and 2003 backend cluster active/passive node. But I hate that backend cluster node as it's never works correctly. We have some budget to expand so we're going to introduce the ESX with the CX300 SAN in our environment. So I'm going to setup esx server and want to put the exchange as a virtual/VM server instead of running on physical host for HA. At first I was thinking of cloning the two 2003 exchange physical host to a VM and continue to run on exchange 2003 but I want to explore the 2007 exchange as I figure I have to upgrade to exchange 2007 soon.

I just came accross the artiticle and it stated that "OMA has been discontinued in Exchange 2007" is that correct? because I have a lot of users using smart phone "Windows Mobile Phone" to send/receive email and state in touch with their calendar and contact. if that is correct then I don't think we switching to 2007 at all because we don't want to switch to blackberry.

ok. I need some help here. after I installed the CAS server to replace the 2003 FE, everything is up and running fine. I get to the site and it presents me with the logon screen. I enter the domain\userid and password and this is what I get: "Outlook Web Access could not find a mailbox for mydomain\Myaccount. If the problem continues, contact technical support for your organization and tell them the following: The mailbox may be stored on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 or Microsoft Exchange 2003 server, or the Active Directory user account was created recently and has not yet replicated to the Active Directory site where this Client Access server is hosted. " what did i do wrong? if i understand correct on how exchange 2007 work. that I have to replace the 2003 FE with the 2007 CAS first so that user can logon to either exchange 2003 mailbox or 2007 mailbox. but doesn't seen to work. currently I don't have 2007 hub and mailbox server install yet. I want to make sure CAS work first. can someone give me suggestion what I do wrong here?

Ok, I was using the /OWA last time and I'm getting that error. I switch to /exchange and I was able to logon fine now. But here is the problem may occurs... my users always type in https://mail.mydomain.com to access their email. why is 2007 no longer able to access https://mail.mydomain.com instead using have to type in https://mail.mydomain.com/owa for user has migrated to 2007 and https://mail.mydomain.com/exchange for user still at 2003? can it configure just like 2003 so that user only have to type in https://mail.mydomain.com to access the email? I see my phone will be ringing all day if it can not be as my users is not computer savy. not only that some laptop user access their mail via RPC over https, which mean I have to change the setting to either https://mail.mydomain.com/owa or https://mail.mydomain.com/exchange too. also windows smartphone have to change to either https://mail.mydomain.com/owa or https://mail.mydomain.com/exchange too as currently it set at https://mail.mydomain.com. please help please help....

read the article mentioned above u will understand the proxying between the OWA 2003 and the OWA 2007 also u should not but https://mail.domain.com/owa or /exchange in configuring RPC/https this is not right go to the IIS on the ex2k3 FE and the CAS and open the file IISstart.htm and change the redirection setting to be https://mail.domain.com/exchange and point the OWA public IP on the FW to point to the ex2k7 CAS insted pointing to the Ex2k3 FE server by this when your client accessing https://mail.domain.com they will be redirected to /Exchange automatically notice in the exchange system manager/server config/client access server that the CAS server have a /Exchange web directory so he can process it after finishing the migration u can rechange the IISstart on the CAS to redirect to /OWA normally test it and feed me back with ur results if u dont mind Thankx

ok. I have make the changes to the CAS and so far so good user of 2003 can type in and get the the site no problem. so for those migrate to 2007 they have to type in https://mail.domain.com/owa to access the webmail until everyone is migrate to 2007 then i change the redirect in CAS to OWA right? for outlook and mobile phone. there is no change right? it is still https://mail.domain.comfor RPS over https. i'm installing the hub and mailbox for for 2007 and migrate a couple users to see how it goes. am I on the right track so far? thank you for your help and patient with me so far.

OK, so far I have clone my test environment to vm with AD, 2003 FE, 2003 Cluster Active/Passive Back-end server then install 2007 CAS. I then change the IP address of the CAS to the ip of 2003FE and assign 2003 FE new IP. I able to logon via the website with user account no problem and able to sent to another account within test AD environment still with 2003 mailbox with 2007 CAS. I have not and don't think I can send test email to outside world. so I can not tell if it able to send properly or successfully to outside world. I the proceed to install HUB transport and mailbox on another server name msx2007BE. I then proceed to move one mailbox from 2003 to 2007 mailbox all seems go fine. I logon the desktop in the test environment and launch outlook client. It open up fine. I try to send a test email from user account that in 2007 mailbox to another user account in 2003 mailbox and vice verse but it does not go thru. Neither account receive the email that sent to one another. I looked at the queue on the 2007 hub/mailbox server and see all the test email that I sent queued up in there. I looked at the 2003 back-end queue and the 2003FE-msx2007BE (Routing Group Connector) is in the retry state and have all the test messages that I sent earlier. It state that "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt." what could be wrong? when open outlook client, I also get prompted with the "Security Alert" pop up box as follow. quote:
msx2007FE.my-domain.com Information you exchange with this site cannot be viewed or changed by others. However, there is a problem with the site's security certificate OK- the security certificate is from trusted certifying authority OK- the security certificate date is valid error x- the name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site. Do you want to proceed? why is the security certificate invalid and does not match? I have the 2003FE IIS copy the certificate over to the 2007 CAS and able to see the certificate and view it fine. although this certificate was generated by our internal AD. could that be the problem? another question I have, when user send email to outside world. is it send out via the 2003FE if user still in 2003 exchange mailbox? or it send out via the CAS?
