I have a sbs 2003 that had exchange configured as a .local account.  The users would pop for email externally, but they also have a .local account setup for shared calendaring and internal emailing.  Now that they have their own IP et al., I need to drop the pop account and configure them to use exchange.  What needs to be done to switch this from User@domain.local to user @domain.com?

I've google, just can't find this exact thing.  Any insight or kb articles appreciated.

First you have to create a Recipient Policy for domain.com and make your SBS authorotative for it and also make sure that your mailboxEnabled users are beeing stamped with a @domain.com SMTP address.

Then you have to make certain that external SMTP-traffic (TCP Port 25) can reach your SBS/Exchange. A usual configuration is to have some sort of Port Forwarding on the companys firewall (which normally holds the public IP address)

And last but not least, you have to alter your MX-records on the Intenet to point to your public IP (firewall external interface). A good configuration is to keep the old ISP as a backup MX-pointer and have them queue mail if your SBS Server is down for what ever reason. Just have the MX-pointer to your SBS have preference 10 and your ISP have 20.

Thank you for the reply Jesper.  I understand parts 2 & 3, but had a question about the recipient policy.  Should I just edit the default policy and modify the SMTP object from a domain.local to a domain.com?  Then run a rebuild with the Recipient Update Service.  Would it then be neccessary to edit the email address tab for the users under AD Users and Groups?  Would I need to make any changes to the DNS on the sbs or anywhere else in AD to complete the process?  Sorry for the laundry list, but any advice appreciated.

If your Default Recipient Policy (NickName=*) stamps @domain.local smtp addresses and you wish all users with @domain.local to now also have @domain.com then by all means go ahead and add the new domain name to your exsiting policy. Donīt forget to change it to defalt smtp address if you wish your users mail address to primarily be @domain.com.
