We have a simple Exchange 2007 Standard install. We would like to pop our ISP directly and not alter MX record using a third Party POP3 connector. Internal mail works and receiving mail works as well. Sending external email is the problem. Nothing happens, not even an error. I beleive we are missing a setting some place but uncertain where. Does anyone have a step by step procedure on how to confiure a third party pop connector for Exchange 2007. We are using EFS by Chimira and setup is straight forward. We beleive problem is in Echange setup. Thanks in advance

You said that receiving mail works so how do you think the POP3 connector is the problem? Talk to us about the "Send Connector" in Exchange. Did you create one, what does it say, where are the messages going?

Sorry, that's correct. The send connector is what we are concerned with. We have only one send connector configured, with FQDN of ISP mail server. SMTP address space with "*". "Route mail through the following smart host" set at IP address of ISP's mail server. Using Basic Authentication with BA over TLS. When checking Exchange queue, it is holding all test emails at this point and my third party pop3 connector states there are no emails to forward. What do you think?

Again with the 3rd party POP3 connector !! That's got nothing to do with the question you posted, whether or not what you posted is what you "asked" is a different matter :-) So, the smarthost is the IP address of the destination server? You have put that IP address inside square brackets, right? Better still, why the IP if there is a FQDN? Your previous sentence talks about the FQDN and you then configure the smarthost with an IP address which doesn't make much sense to me as written by you. Also there's the issue of authentication to the server. On the message queue (in the tools part of the Exchange management console) you will get a message telling you why the message can't get out. So: 1. Ensure IP address is inside square brackets or use an FQDN 2. Check the authentication is right 3. See /why/ the messages aren't going. 4. Report back.

Within the queue I checked several of the emails and have noted in the properties, Last Error: 400 4.4.7 Message delayed. The smart host IP Address is the address of my ISP mail server and it is in brackets. On the general tab of the Send connector properties, we have the FQDN of the ISP mail server under the "Specify the FQDN this connector will provide in responce to HELO..." For Smart Host Authentication under the Network Tab after selecting "Change" button, we thought it was appropriate to select "Basic Authentication" since our ISP requires Authentication to connect. Hope this clarifies things.

Yes. We're done. Talk to your ISP to troubleshoot the username or the password or the method of authentication. One thing you will need to do is to set up Outlook Express (somewhere, I don't care where) to connect to something (I don't care what) and use the ISP smarthost as the outbound smtp server and use those authentication settings to check if the client works where the Exchange server doesn't. Check that out, see what the relay owners say and get back to us.

I setup Outlook express and confirmed that Basic Authentication is required with my ISP. I was able to send and receive with this test. I forgot to mention that my ISP requires to set the SMTP port to 587. I have this set in my POP3 connector, should this be set in Exchange and if so, where? I understand the default Receive connectors indicate port 25.

So to make sure the Exchange uses 587 to connect to the IP address you have selected you edit the Send Connector and just select the radio button "Basic" and tick "TLS blah" which is right underneath it. Because of that you don't need to set 587 anywhere. Please stop talking about the POP3 connector because it has nothing to do with SENDING messages which is entirely the responsibility of the Send Connector.

Then you either have a compatability problem between Exchange and the destination POP server (like I had in beta which was solved) or there's a spelling issue somewhere.
