In an Exchange 2003 environment, no special SMTP connectors setup since the whole environment is 2003, and two or more domains email accounts are hosted on the server. Is there some form of internal working within Exchange 203 that if it sees or knows that if the target email address is hosted on the server that the originating email address is also hosted on that it will deliver the message internally without ever going 'out' to the Internet to see what the MX record settings on the target domain are set at?

Exchange will do a DC lookup and will be told that the address is internal and what the homemdb is of the target user. You can have as many smtp domains as you want internally, no messages destined for any of these domains will leave your environment.

And if one of the domains was moved to another network external to its original setup, the DNS settings (MX) records on that domain were updated to point to the new mail server, and the mailboxes on the original server were left intact, then other domains on the original network would not be able to get their messages delivered to the domain that moved since Exchange on the originating network still thinks the mailboxes are internal to the network and therefore won't look up the DNS info on the domain to know that it has been moved. Right?

Well, if you then move the smtp domain you have to do two things. 1. Remove the Recipient Policy so that your machine knows not to accept email for that domain. 2. Run ADMODIFY.NET and totally remove, en masse, all SMTP addresses for that domain you moved. Once you've purged stuff out you're all set.

Mark, Thanks so much for the replies and the explanations they contain, that is exactly what I was looking for to further my understanding of the internals of Exchange 2003 and how it works on message delivery.
