i created a new user in exchange by creating a new user, etc. everything works fine.

problem: user can't receive email from outside the company i.e. yahoo, hotmail, etc

people who try to send email to this user get a autoreply with:

To: user@domain.com
Subject: test 2
Sent: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 12:17:38 -0800

did not reach the following recipient(s):

user@domain.com on Wed, 19 Jan 2005 12:14:27 -0800
The recipient name is not recognized
MSEXCH:IMS:domain.com:domain:WEB1 0 (000C05A6) Unknown Recipient

Please help. Uregent!

Make sure your users have the proper SMTP email addresses.

Have you created a recipient policy to generate SMTP addresses for your "@domain.com" email addresses?

If not, do your users have that address (user@domain.com) in the "Email Addresses" tab within the properties of a user using Active Directory Users and Computers?

CONFIRMED

Have you created a recipient policy to generate SMTP addresses for your "@domain.com" email addresses?
Not sure what you mean by this. Can you provide the Steps.

If not, do your users have that address (user@domain.com) in the "Email Addresses" tab within the properties of a user using Active Directory Users and Computers?
Yes, they exist. I have compared it to the rest of the users that can receive email from external sources.

Don't worry now about the recipient policy, it's designed to generate email addresses by default, such as username@domain.com, firstname.lastname@domain.com, etc. etc. Here's a link describing it's features for future reference:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822447

So, some users receive email, and others don't? Are there multiple domains, some that are working, others that aren't? Can you tell us if there's any "difference" between working mailboxes and non-working mailboxes?

Does internal mail delivery work between working and non-working users?

Can you try this from a command prompt at your desktop (just as typed below). Does this method bounce as well?

telnet exchangeserver.domain.com 25
helo yourdesktopcomputer.domain.com
mail from:<youremailaddress@yourdomain.com>
rcpt to:<bouncinguseraddress@yourdomain.com>
data
Subject: Test
This is a test by telnet'ing to the smtp port.
Please let me know if you receive this.

So, the rcpt to: in the above test, you're using a gmail.com account? If that's the case, you're attempting to relay off of your exchange server to gmail.com, and if your company configured the exchange server to disallow relaying, then this would fail. This is by design.

Can you explain the gmail.com part to us?

our company is axesstel. the original users on the exchange account are functioning properly. however, the new users i've created can not receive email from external sources i.e. whatever@gmail.com, wahtever@yahoo.com, etc. (seems like anyone not in the axesstel contact list maybe)

i will specify the exact steps for telnet:
user that has the problem is "user12". user@gmail.com is a ex. of a user outside the company tryingt to email user12@axesstel.com which fails.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
telnet exchange.axesstel.com 25
helo 192.168.1.45
mail from:<user12@axesstel.com>
rcpt to:<user@gmail.com>
(fails here - msg "unable to relay for"
(didn't bother below steps)

Oh ok, I see what you were trying.

Do this:

substitute: mail from:<user12@axesstel.com>
with: mail from:<user@gmail.com>

substitute: rcpt to:<user@gmail.com>
with: rcpt to:<BOUNCINGUSER@axesstel.com>

mail from is the Gmail user while rcpt to is your internal bouncing user. It's just the reverse of what you were attempting. Disregard my schpeal about the relaying....you shouldn't get that message this time.

Let us know what you see now.

Ok, now if you put in the data part and subject and the dot ".", it should get queue'd up for delivery.

Can you check if it was delivered?

you think this may be a firewall issue? we have firebox. i remember the former IT guys had to manually change the config. to let new users gain access to vpn, but i'm not sure if the same thing has to be done in regards to receiving external email

Nope, not a firewall.

The error you reported is very specific.

Basically Exchange is saying, "Huh, I can't find this email address in Active Directory on the Domain Controller I'm communicating with"

How recently did you create this user? If you create the user, then immediately started testing and got bounces, then it could have been AD replication taking its time.

Can you retest to same user from your gmail/yahoo account now?

Actually, it's been a while. I've created 2 users, this one and another one a month ago. Both still can't receive email from the outside.
