I am trying to remove an Exchange 2000 server after migrating users over to new hardware and I am recieving the following error:

"Microsoft Exchange messaging & collaboration server cannot be assingned to this action "Remove" because:

- 1 or more users currently use the mailbox on the server. These users must be moved to amailbox store on a different server or be mail disabled before un installing this server.

I have checked to see what mailboxes are left and these are all system mailboxes so they can not be moved or deleted.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi!

I just had the same problem and basically dissected my system to find what mailbox might be left. I overlooked the possibility of a remaining user with Exchange properties, and not necessarily a mailbox (thanks Neil Hobson for the tip!). In our case it turned out that a particular user had been created by copying an old one. The new account was never mail-enabled so I knew for a fact there were no mailboxes left (since all others had been accounted for). But the copy procedure left information in the AD making the server believe there were still mailboxes left.

Run a search using Active Directory Users and Computers. Right-click the domain and choose Find. On the Advanced tab, choose User and then Exchange Home Server. Set the condition to 'ends with' and put in your server name.

This search revealed the user in question, then I used ADUC to remove the Exchange properties. Perhaps not the best error message MS invented. Had it said anything other the "mailboxes" left I might have saved myself a lot of time. Hope this helps you out!

Heya,

I had the same uninstall problem. This solved it.

I tried the steps in Q279202 to no avail.

Cheers all

Bryan
