I need to rebuild an exchange 2000 server which is a member server of an exchange 5.5 server. In other words, it doesnt have a role yet. All the mailboxes are still on the exch 5.5 server. Do I need to rerun forestprep and domainprep before I take the server down? Can I just remove it from setup. What are the steps to do this? Thank you.

You can completely remove Exchange from AD by running Setup /RemoveOrg to remove the schema and Exchange settings from AD. Then you can rerun Setup /ForestPrep and DomainPrep and install Exchange again.
