Hi We currently have a 2003 clustered exchange environment (active/passive) and would like to migrate to a virtual 2003 exchange server, non clustered. I have never done a migration before and would like some insight. Other information: AutoAccept Agent is installed along with Outlook Web Access. The new server will be in same domain and will have same name. How hard (trickY) is this to do? Thanks Arnie

Why would you want to create another box with same name - when an earlier clustered virtual server name already exist. Why not simply create a new one and perform a simple migration (move mailbox / public / system folders).

The reason we are doing this is because the two physical boxes are coming off of lease. Since the lease of these servers, we have implemented a virtual solution using VMware. So now we want to build a new virtual exchange server. It actually doesn't have to be the same name but would be nice. Oh and to make things easier, the databases (mailboxes) and log files are stored on a SAN, so I guess it is more of a transition to a new server instead of a migration. Just wondering if anything that I should watch out for, since I have never done a migration / build of an exchange system. Thanks

Yeah, it's a bad idea to think you need to have the same machine name. There is no need for it and you run way more of a risk. Install the new server and do the PF replication and mailbox moves (etc. etc. follow the docs). As the users are moved their Outlook profiles will be updated automatically so you don't need to fret about going round and changing stuff or scripting anything etc. etc.

documents from the MS website. Documents from this website. Installing a new server is not a difficult undertaking and quite a few people write articles and blog posts to show what they did. Just have a quick google

I wish AD and Exchange would understand this. It's best not to take a short-cut and end up in a bigger mess than ever. I would personally recommend, and i guess Mark also agrees for a plain and simple migration. There are loads and loads of documentation that talks about how to move Exchange from one server to another. If you have any particular query about migration, you are always welcome to post your queries here.

Agree. The SAN has no relevance in this case. Do the migration by mailbox moves etc. and then hand the empty LUNs back to the storage team for reallocation.
