Unique Migration Question - 17.Jan.2012 9:13:52 PM

Like many companies, our Exchange 2010 budget money was scrapped.... So I have to make due with what we have. I recently completed virtualizing most of our datacenter, minus of coarse our Exchange server, along with our primary Domain Controller.

I have a plan in place, but wanted some input to ensure it will be successful before I attempt it. My first step is to build a fresh VM which will be our new primary DC. At that point I will decommission our current primary DC and its outdated hardware. I also want to install a secondary DC.

My goal is to use the disaster recovery type rebuild scenario to re-build my Exchange environment on a freshly built VM, however my current Exchange server is also our current secondary DC.... That is the kicker. Can I use these instructions http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997176%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx
to successfully move an Exchange environment on a VM AS WELL AS forcefully remove its DC status (I want my Exchange VM to just be an Exchange server)? If I have a primary and secondary DC in place before this migration, my thought is it will work.....

Any strategies or other input is greatly appreciated. Will this scenario play out how I think it will? Also, our current Exchange DB is around 200GB. I figure I should perform general maintenance on it during this ordeal (Shrink and Defrag?).
