Hello, I currently have 2 domain controllers in in my org. one is running ex 2k. However my EX box is getting old and i am considering getting a whole new server to run exchange 2k. i need to keep the same name as my old ex2k server, because i do not want to make changes to all clients outlook. I would like to know the easiest and best way how to go about this transition, what are some of the common problems i should look out for and how complicated this would be.

Thank you
shamid

As long as you do it right you can have the new server with a different name without having to update all the users profiles.

1. Install the new Exchange 2000 server into the same Exchange organization as the existing one.
2. Move all the mailboxes over.
3. Replicate and rehome any public folders
4. Ensure your new server is referenced for SMTP based mail.
5. Have the users access their mailboxes using Outlook, and their profile will be automatically updated.
6. Leave the old server running until you are sure everyone has accessed their mailboxes.

As long as the old server is running when they access their mailboxes MAPI will automatically update their profile.

Hi Mark, first of all i thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my post, i greatly appreciate it. There are a couple of things I want to know with reguards to your answer. You see, I am a bit nervous because i am the only admin for this company so i do not have a team to work with. I have some knowledge of exchange but not a great deal of it. Anyways, based on your answer here is what i want to know.

1. After installing exchange on the new serverin the same org. and moving the mail boxes, how do I REPLICATE & REHOME MY PUBLIC FOLDERS ?
2. How do I ensure that the new server is REFERENCED for SMTP BASED EMAILS ?

Also, is there any book/s out there that you know of on ex2k that will explain to me how to do what i am trying to do?

Thank you

Here is a Microsoft article on how to rehome public folders.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;288150
or look up Q288150.
When I did this, I was rehoming from an Exchange 5.5 server to an Exchange 2000 server (using a different procedure) and instead of moving my PF it emptied it out... So I manually had to add the data into the Exchange 200 server. Then, in a few days, I had 2 of everything! Go figure!
As far as the SMTP question, it depends on your configuration, for example, if you get your corporate e-mail from your ISP, you'd have to make sure that you informed them of the server name/IP address when you switched over...

Hope this helps!
