Hello:
I'm upgrading a 5.5 server to 2000.

History:
Exchange 5.5 is SP4 on a NT4 w/ Sp6a
I have the AD domain in place (dotnj.org).
The mail server is the last 4.0 server.
It was originally the PDC. Now it's the BDC.
I have a new 2000 server to replace the existing server.
There are only about 150 users.
Workstations are a mix of 98 & 2000.

Objective:
Migrate the users to the new server while maintaining their connectivity to the new server with as little intervention as possible.

I want to ready the server for migration as best that I can and then perform the move.

Steps:
Install the ADC
Perform Forest prep
Perform domain prep
Allow time for updates to occur.
Perform the 'move'

QUESTIONS:
Since I have a AD domain in place and working I assume the ADC will populate the existing users and add any if needed (there should be no additional adds). Is the ADC simply moving the users and their properties from 5.5 to AD?

The # of regular changes are few. So, the ADC is going on the new 2000 server. Good?

I've debated performing the migration is steps (departments) as well as overnight. What are the pros & cons of each?

From what I remember the end users configuration will automatically change to the new server. How is this initiated/performed? How can I confirm all users have migrated successfully?

ADC will create a default Connection Agreement, that will notify your servers of one another. The changes for your user information will not populate to AD until you setup a Recipient Connection Agreement. You do this through ADC. As far as your users, their Outlook clients will automatically update their Server settings after you migrate the mailboxes from the 5.5 server to the 2k server. Use a test mailbox and move that account first. Then log on to make sure everything has migrated. I am assuming that you are using the Find-Exchange-Users in AD and then EX tasks to move your users, this will tell you if your account move was successful.....by Exchange standards. Good luck.
