Ok. My environment is as follows:

All Exchange 2000 servers (7 of them) are inside our firewall. One of them is designated a front-end server.

We would like to upgrade the front-end server to Windows 2003 and Exchange 2003. I understand we would have to upgrade it to Exch2003 first, then Windows 2003. Here is my question. If we want to 'retire' the server could we run the deinstall - removing it properly from the site. Then rebuild the box using Windows 2003. Then install Exchange 2003. Would this work? Again, i'm in a Exchange 2000 site and this would be the first server (front end box).

Anyone see any problems doing this? Am i better off just upgrading it to Exch2003 and then windows 2003 and thus preserving the config?

BTW - one other important piece of information. We have a 2000 AD site. All DC's are windows 2000 and I plan to keep it that way for some time. Will this affect my plans to move to Exchange 2003 with Windows 2003?

Brian

Hello skipdog77,

I would personally do a clean install instead of upgrading the old OS/Exchange server, but of course it would make it easier for you to do an in place upgrade.

Actually you would also get some economical advantages out of doing a clean install, as you don't need to dedicate an Exchange 2003 Enterprise version, in order to use the server as a Front-end server. This is one of the things which have changed since Exchange 2000.

But anyway the choice is really yours [Roll Eyes]

Remember to upgrade all your W2K server to minimum SP3 before you present a W2K3 server to the AD domain.

Regards

Henrik,

So I can just deinstall exchange from the front-end server and retire the machine. (actually im rebuilding the same machine) - then rebuild the OS (Windows 2003) and install Exchange 2003 and it will install itself into the existing Exchange 2000 site with no issues?

You say the Front-end server is the first Exchange server installed ?

If yes you may want to check out:

As it will then contain certain vital roles.
