I am running an environment with the following setup:

---------------------
2 Front-end POP3 servers
3 Back-end mailbox servers
2 SMTP servers
---------------------

I know that front-end servers need to be upgraded before back-end servers, and I have done that, so I currently have this:

---------------------
2 front-end POP3 servers (Exchange 2003)
3 back-end mailbox servers (Exchange 2000 SP3 on W2K SP4)
2 SMTP servers (Exchange 2000 SP3 on W2K SP4)
---------------------

My question is this: Is there any restrictions regarding whether or not a SMTP server should/could be upgraded before a back-end mailbox server? That's how I'd like to do it in this environment and just wanted to know if there was any snags or reasons why that would not be possible. I've not seen anything one way or another about this scenario. Thanks in advance!

Hello Joe,

Upgrading the 2 SMTP servers first will not cause you any trouble, it's fully supported.
