Got a question about a upgrade I was thinking about.

I have Excahnge 2K running on Win2k standard edition. My server is a dell 2850 with 3gb of ram. After reading some articles I realize that Exchnage 2K will not utilize memory over 2gb unless the Windows OS is Win2k Advanced Server utilizing the /3gb switch in the boot.ini file.

Unfortunately there is no in-place upgrade to 2k advanced server, only a clean install.

This is my only exchange server. I use Arcserve v9 with the exchange agent for backups.

I am thinking I could rebuild the server with a clean install of Advanced Server and then use the /disasterrecovery option of the exchange setup to restore the server.

Is this a viable plan?

After using the disasterrecovery switch do I then restore the exchange organization from the tape backup?

My reasons for keeping ex2k going is because I use the IM server and would like to spend money on other licenses like Off2003 and perhaps holdout for E12.

If your exchaneg is intalled on a member serer and you would like to upgrade the version of OS to 2k advance the yes you can user the /disasterrecovery switch to get all the exhcange realted information back.

1. Get the OS to ADV version
2. Install Exchange with the setup /disasterrecovery switch
3. Restore the data from the backup

However, if the excahnge is installed on a DC/GC and you do not have a second DC then take a system state backup. Resintall the server and restore the system state backup and then use the /disasterrecovery switch.
