I currently have Server 2003 Standard with Exchange 2003 as well.  It has been my single DC, Mail, DNS server for approx 2 1/2 years.  I want to build a new Server 2008 and Exchange 2007.  I want to transfer all the mailboxes users etc.  Can this be done from a new installation.  I understand I can just upgrade the current server but thats not what I'm looking to do since I want to retire that pc.  Is this possible and if so can you point me the way?

hi mate,

we can't do inplace upgrade from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007.
You need to bring the Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008
Replicate the public folder and OAB
Move the mailboxes
Move the connector

But i am not sure what is the exact help you need like installing Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008 or complete transition to Exchange 2007. You can go to google and put the keyword Transition from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 you will get lots of articles

Thanks for the reply.  I know I cant do a in place upgrade.  I want to Build from scratch a 2008 server with exchange 2007 then move all users and mail to the new server then throw away the 2003 server if you will.  I  may have misunderstood you some but just wanted to verify.  I'm think inplace as in same computer which I do not want to do if I dont have to to achieve the ultimate goal.

hi

You can built windows 2008 server and promote it to dc then move fsmo roles to this new dc also promote it to GC

Also configure DNS on this new DC

Change your domain functional level to windows 2003 native

Change your exchange organization functional level to exchange 2003 native

Now you have to install pre-requisite for installing exchange 2007 sp 1

You could follow this link

Awsome.  Thats the kinda answer I was looking for.  By moving the fsmo and the promoting the server to DC and then installing exchange 2007, will this also have all the mailboxes moved over as well?

Ultimatly some how I would like to turn the 2003 server into the primary 2008 DC and mail server.  I know that part will be tricky if possible.
