Has anyone here successfully upgraded from Exchange 5.5 SP4 to Exchange 2000? I am trying to upgrade on a test network and I am getting 2 errors when I try to select upgrade in the setup wizard. The first is that it can't access the Windows 2000 Active Directory. I am able to browse to thru the directory on that machine, so I'm not quite sure why I would be getting that message. Second error I am getting is that it failed to contact the Schema Master Server for this Active Directory forest. I'm not sure what I need to do here. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

when doing your upgrade, did you install ADC, ran forestprep & domainprep? You need to set up a active directory connector 1st before AD can sync w. your current exchange users.

I have the exact same issue however I have two Exchange 5.5 sites an two-way ADC from each 5.5 site to an OU in AD. The ADC is working great, but when I try to upgrade either of the 5.5 boxes I get an error complaining that it cannot connect to AD...

#1 You only need to have the ADC installed, you do not need any Connection Agreements.

#2 If you have tried installations a number of times, you should check Active Directory, using like Adsiedit, and remove the Microsoft Exchange object and replicate among DCs, to remove failed upgrades.

#3 I recommend running /forest and /domainprep manually, ie., setup /forestrep

#4 The account you are running /forestprep w/ should be in Enterprise Admins and Schema admins Groups. The account needs access to Exch 5.5 Directory, so you should give it Service Account Admin permission at Org, Site, and Configuration containers.

#5 Make sure the account that is starting up the ADC Service is same account you are running /forestprep with, and make sure it is not in UPN format (user@whatever.com) but in domain\user format. Make sure the Exch 5.5 Services are not starting up in UPN format either.

#6 If IMC on 5.5 box, I would remove it

#7 Make sure you don't have Disjointed Namespace.

Ok, this may be a really silly question, but can an Exch 2000 server exist in an environment w/o active directory? We have a Win NT 4.0 domain and only want to upgrade our Exchange server to Exch 2000. We dont have the money or resources to upgrade the entire domain to Win2000 and Active Dir.

Sorry for that...before upgrading your server to Windows 2000 you need to change the LDAP port number on your Exchange server. By default it is set to 389 and that port is what AD uses to communicate as well. Since AD is a main staple of 2000 it locks that port for itself. Change the LDAP port on the Exchange sever to something other than 389 (390, whatever) and you should be good. This information was obtained from the Roberta Bragg Voodoo Exchange article from the May 2001 MCPMag.
