I have a new Exchange 2007 installation of three servers (1 mailbox-Hub, 1 Client Access and 1 Edge server) all running Windows 2003 with all of the latest service packs etc. Are there any known issues I need to be aware of upgrading these W2003 severs to W2008? I have all of the above Exchange roles running and configured but STILL have all of my user mailboxes on Exchange 2003 and was thinking it would be better to upgrade the NEW installation to W2008 before it was completely in production. As you know, after you install a Exchange 2007 into a Exchange 2003 site your Exchange 2007 servers ARE in production even through all of your mailboxes are still on 2003. I learned this once when I shutdown my Exchange 2007 mailbox/Hub transport server and mail flow stopped to the Exchange 2003 backend server. Should I what to upgrade to Windows 2008 from Windows 2003 till after I completely move from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2008 or do it now before all of the user mailboxes have been moved?

No i'm not, I understand that I can't upgrade Exchange 2003 to 2007. I have a running Exchange 2007 sp1 install running on Windows 2003 64bit servers that I want to upgrade to Windows 2008 64bit servers. cheers,

I think you are misunderstanding the point here. You cannot perform an upgrade in your situation. You will have to perform a migration! Install a second server running exchange 2007 SP1 on Win2K8 and move mailboxes over to it. "when Exchange 2007 (RTM or SP1) is installed on a computer, the operating system cannot be upgraded in place" --> from article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc296562(EXCHG.80).aspx, read section "Unsupported Migration Processes"

Excuse me sir, I must not have constructed my question clearly. But if you read the title I put on the thread you will see that my question to the group was about upgrading an Exchange 2007 sp1 site from windows 2003 to windows 2008. My question is not about the complexities surrounding setting up Exchange 2007 in an environment that already has an existing Exchange 2003 system in operation; I’m well past that point. It’s about upgrading the operating system on a set of servers and finding out from my piers if there is anything I should look at for and getting any pointers from someone how has done it before. Respectfully,

Stevenrlong, Please correct me if I am wrong in what I understand from this thread. 1. You have 3 exchange servers all running Exchange 2007 SP1 on Windows 2003 servers 2. You are planning on upgrading these same 3 servers (that are running Exchange 2007 SP1) from Windows 2003 to Windows 2008 while they are still running Exchange 2007 SP1. Am I correct in my statements??

My apologies again, Thank you for your answer, Now that I’ve read the KB article you referenced past the point that said that windows 2008 is supported I understand what you were trying to tell me all along. “You cannot take an existing Exchange 2007 server (RTM or SP1) running on Windows Server 2003, and do an in-place upgrade of the operating system to Windows Server 2008.”
