Hi all,

I have just arrived at a company where they are currently running an Exchange Server (version 5.5 SP3) on a Windows 2000 AD environment.
They want to upgrade to Exchange 2003 ASAP. Last time they tried to get from 5.5 to E2k and unfortunately it crashed out mid way at some point and caused a whole lot of fuss etc so IÆm told. I know that the machine Exchange is installed on isn't overly stable anymore and we have got a nice brand spanking new server to put the new version on. My only worry is that itÆs going to crash on me again, and I am wondering how generally stable the installation of 2003 goes?
Are there any major issues to try to avoid?

This is my first installation of E2003 (and I am in no way whatsoever an Exchange Guru! (my MCSA didn't cover any part of Exchange lol)

So any advice and friendly shoves in the right direction would be most welcome! (Alternatively if someone wants to do it for me that would be great too hehe)

Thanks,

Dale

The Exchange 2003 installation procedure is very stable if you ask me (I've seen a few errors but never experienced a crash), but if you don't do your homework before the migration you can meet many obscure errors and overall issues.

I would suggest you buy a book or two then start reading. The Exchange 2003 Technical Documentation Library also contains a wealth of information:

Microsoft TechNet: Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Technical Documentation Library:

You may especially want to take a closer look at the migration guide for small to midsized companies:

The deployment tools take through the upgrade step-by-step.

I'm going to buy a couple of those books mentioned in the 'books' section, but one quick question...

If upgrading from 5.5 to Exchange 2003 and you want Exchange 2003 on a seperate server (much newer and more powerful) does the upgrade cater for this?
I heard something somewhere that if you install Exchange 2003 on another server when you already have a 5.5 server in the domain it will effectivly transfer all the settings accross to the new install, then give you the opportunity to remove the old 5.5. server out of the domain for good?

Is this true?

Thanks a lot,

You can migrate to Exchange 2003 by setting up an ADC then install Exchange 2003 into the Exchange 5.5 organization. This way you can move mailboxes, public folders, SMTP connectors etc. to the new server with almost no downtime at all.

When everything is moved you can decommission the old 5.5 server.
